Wow, that valve must have been nearly seized to bend the push rod like that. That's approaching a 45* angle!!! Definitely rode hard.

Not sure exactly what happened, but the heads look OK... the rockers seem ok... the lifters though (well a few of them) look like the collapsed a bit and with all the debris I saw in there... like sand/mud/rusty stuff, I have to imagine a lot of gunk was passing around and maybe the oiling was just not up to task... not really sure.

Wow that really sucks. I just bought a "rebuilt" carb on line. Couldn't tune it to save my life. I'm not good with that sorta thing (hence why I bought one) so I finally took it to a shop. Diaphragm leaked , venturi tube bent and the power valve was blown out.

Not on the same scale as what your dealing with but I feel your pain. The only saving grace is you'll have peace of mind once you get it all rebuilt. I'm digging my little 304. Sounds great with the headers and glass packs.?

This thread has gone a little quiet.....I am so used to CB's fast and frequent updates. I've been spoiled.

Set out to do some engine work last night and found some interesting things...

Upon close inspection...

20201114_150117_resized.jpg

So, I knew it had a leak, I just wasn't sure why, but I had another oil pan, so swapped it out... fiberglass has no place on an oilpan pepole!

20201114_170652_resized.jpg

Ran some degreaser over it and some brake cleaner... needs a lot more cleaning and one of the holes on the valve cover doesn't line up, but all in all it is moving along... crank looked great, as did the rockers.

New oil pan shot... went with a one piece rubber gasket as well, so we will see how that works out.

Also, when the plastic valve cover was on there, the guy mentioned he couldn't get it to seal right... I don't have a picture of it, but it was missing the rear most bolt and the sides were hourglass shaped... literally hanging over the edge of the head... also, there wasn't a water pump gasket... so that I think explains the water leak.

We will get it all buttoned up and put it in the project for starters and then move onto the 304 when it gets rebuilt.

NOTE: This winter will be slower on progress than previous years, but something big is to come, so stay tuned... next summer should be a lot more productive...

Can't be Florida..... It's way too hot to get anything done in the garage in the summer.

:)

For those that know me and have worked with me, Florida is not an option... there isn't enough water and t-shirts in a day for the amount I sweat... and I like the cold more than the hot... although I am sure the family would love the idea...

Wood stove is fired up... 76 in the house, 30 outside... not to bad... kind of like FL temps inside.

Was a week from hell at work, but finally got out there to get the head off, check out the inside, clean it up a bit and also pack up some parts (and Christmas Secret Santa present)... making progress.

Engine over all is very tight and clean inside... it had about 90K on it, so I will put a new head gasket on it and clean it up, paint it and run it. I also got the valve cover to fit... I thought it was the holes, but really it was gasket material and oil in the holes of the head... had to clean and retap all of them and now it sits down and seals right.

So, I was working on the Jeep engine and something kept bugging me... the carburetor that I thought was a Weber just didn't look right... the air cleaner did, but the carb itself didn't... so... take off the air cleaner and...

So, I guess I was right... and someone definitely put a lot of time and effort to get this all to work together.

Wow. Guess he really liked the Weber style air cleaner. So after opening up the 304 it wasnt cost effective to use I presume? Pretty rotten for something billed as a rebuilt motor.

Yeah, I have to have it rebuilt and with the money that I have to spend on the rest of the Jeep, I wasn't planning on that expense... plus other expenses that are coming up... so for now.. 258 engine, fuel injection and continue on...

Engine day yesterday... swapped engine stands, put up the new engine, picked up the MPFI... long day, but a good one.

I got it all in under the wire (had a hard stop at 430)... jumped in the shower and just made it... engines are multiplying like it is spring time with bunnies around here!

All good... need to finish cleaning up the other 258 and get it buttoned up, and then do the new one... 304 is up for sale on CL... I just don't have the time/energy/money to put into that one right now.

Hey Craig,
Looking good.
Any details on the make/model of the engine stand (I think you may have mentioned something before in one of your threads)
Thanks.

The brand new one was from https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-908300GA it spins so easily and I have to apply very little torque to it to get it to move...

The 304 is now on an older stand I have from harbor freight I think... there is no comparison between the 2.
Once is $100 and the other is $250

Perhaps overkill, but I am loving the fact I can spin it without an extended crowbar and 2 buddies and all the cursing and beer I have to provide...
