I'm trying to put together a list with photos of all the available tops that were available for the 8, 1/2 cab and full top.

Please add any information you may have and let me know if the info I have posted is wrong.

Dualmatic was the precursor to the Bestop Tiger Top. I am not sure when it was made or if it was different, I just know it exists...because I have one.

There was a top made by grizzly - couple old posts but the photos got lost after the server changeover several years ago.

I thought it might be helpful to have a database for Scrambler full length hard tops and this seems like the logical place to put it. If anyone has any experience with any full length hard tops please feel free to post it here. To the best of my knowledge the only company currently...

Full Hardtop- different styles of mfg.

I'm looking to buy a full hardtop. Would appreciate pictures of the different styles of hardtops by the 4 or 5 manufacturers that made them. Also which ones fit the best, and which ones have the best rear door. any guidance on quirks of each mfg. would also be appreciated and recpriocated.

I have never heard of the postal half top, can anyone else confirm that?

STC also made some soft tops (their website was even active up until a few years ago). If I remember right, they carried on after kayline went bust. BD may have used their patterns when they picked things up 10yrs ago.

B-D Company purchases Specialty Top Co. patterns and equipment!!!

Several months ago I contacted Bestop asking if they were going to produce any Scrambler specific products like the half soft top and tonneau covers similar to what Specialty Top Co. made. Here is the reply they sent me: Thank you for writing. Colby, Unfortunately, we will not be making a half...

That's cool OGRES. Bestop hasn't been in Longmont in years. They are in Louisville now, but they went to Broomfield for a while. They started in Boulder, but I reckon they moved to Longmont in the mid-to-late 70s. I can't recall when they moved out of Longmont but it had to be in the mid 80s.

At the bottom of your post, next to "report" there's a little down arrow. One of the options there should be "edit." If it's not there, it may be because you're a basic level member.
 
#9 is either a Grizzly or a Classic - they were essentially identical on the side but could be distinguished by the rear lift gate. Grizzly looked like an OEM CJ7 lift gate and Classic had a smaller window - (believe they made 2 different rear window sizes). Grizzly was a 1 piece shell top and Classic was a 2 piece (had an inner liner). I have owned both and still have the Grizzly.


#7 may be a Grizzly top

#4 is a custom one-off. There was no factory half-cab for the postal. An owner cut down a postal World Cab to make that one.

As to other tops, Whitco also made a factory half-cab for full hard doors.

Here are some pictures of the parts for this setup. You can see the bag has a pocket for the trim pieces for the top part of the full doors as seen in the 2nd picture.

who makes (made?) the tops in number 11?
Shop just gots 48 inch break, Was in search of dementions to
make an alu/alloy top (world/overland/Alaska Postal) but a purchase is w a y easier.
Is it (they) glass? some type of metal?

Fairly close to unobtanium. First is the Overlander top that was only sold outside the US. The second is the Alaskan postal (~250 made). These are Jeep factory tops.

That's Y the several posts to find 'schematics' (exploded diagram) for
demential take offs. Shop just gota 48 inch break. I can make the doors, bents, not sure on the panels...
 
The top in post 11 was a factory halftop made to be used with full steel doors. I sold it 4-5 years ago for $900, it was is excellent shape
 
A world cab will be hard to recreate with a metal brake. None of the bends are sharp 90 degree. Many are smooth radius bends from a stamped process.

The real hard part is the square corner doors. Making the window frame is easy, finding the glass is the hard part. You must find original glass as nobody make reproduction square corner glass. Or you must make a filler piece like Jeff did on his world cab. I believe he also made a filler for the retro wrangler truck.

The overlander tops have an added issue in the side glass, it has a curve from top to bottom, so you need original glass for it fo fit correctly. Many have added flat glass windows to the postal world cabs, and they look good.

If you plan to recreate one, budget lots of labor on sheet metal banging, bending, stretching, and shrinking to get the right shapes.

Then there is the barn door and the very unique hinges.

In the end, it would be cheaper to buy a postal top or find a world cab Jeep in Australia or Venezuela to have imported.

Pretty low cash savings and flow for that. I am not a sheet metal worker but this thing hasa 'arm' for radi (as well as doing 90*). I'm not as handi as some but w/measurments it would shure make the job easier. More research and thinkin to C if a glass replica or other available top (made since the introduction of them) can offer savings, a model or other options. W/the glass - double swing doors would probably still have to be made up here.
 
chrisful, if you want to make the top from scratch you might as well build it the way you want to. I don't think a schematic of the world cab and doors exist. And imo it would take hundreds of dimensions for said top and doors to recreate.

One other thing you could do is find someone with a postal or overlander locally to take dimensions off of yourself. Good luck.
