1981 with Howell TBI questions.

I have a 81 with the inline 6. My question is did the California Scrambler have the computer operated carb. My mechanic put the coolant temp sensor in the block, but I see online that it is supposed to go in the exhaust manifold. It is running rich, it stumbles when idling, and it is surging. Do you think this could be the cause of my problems? I have a OBD1 scanner on the way. No trolls please.

Your exhaust manifold should have an 02 sensor. I replaced mine after a long soak in penetrating fluid, and it made a marginal improvement. I ended up rebuilding the carburetor and it fixed all of the idle and drivability issues. One idle mixture screw was backed all the way out and the other all the way in when I pulled the carb - possibly the way mine passed a fake smog check before the purchase.

I’m confused title Howell TBI - but you talk about Carburetor. It all depends on the setup. I have Howell fuel injection once set you should be good.

So the instructions say if you have a computer operated carb you need to put the temp sensor in the exhaust manifold. If not then in the block. I put it in the exhaust manifold. I have a question though Riskit. Have you ever had to use the OBD1 scan tool on your Jeep? I bought one but it doesn't want to diagnose.

O2 sensor goes in the exhaust.

The temp sensor can be installed in the intake manifold IF it has coolant flowing through it. If not, install it in the block, or get a 4.0 thermostat housing and install it there.

I have scanned quite a few Howell kits with OBD1 scan tools. They wil scan like an early 90's GM with a 4.3 V6, can't remember the VIN code letter to use off the top of my head, a quick Google search would find it.

Sorry for delayed reply. I do have scan tool connection. But frankly have never had to use it since setup. Setup was 2006 ?? +/-. I see other above have used scan tools. I just say my setup is a 83 CJ7 with Chevy 305 & Howell's FI with no issues. Once set I've been good to go.
