Not unusual. All the choke wire does as apply 12V to the choke. From the factory there were some other bits tied into that IIRC, but when people start pulling all the emissions crap off they often just run a "key power'd on" wire to the choke.

That looks awesome. What paint are you using? Spray, buff, then add a coat or ??? I've never painted a vehicle. I know prep is the most important part, but I kinda want to try it at some point in the not-too-distant future.
