82 restoration start

Hello all, new to this forum. Starting work on my 82 Scrambler, let it go too long. Original paint with some surface rusting, the known rust areas need work. I will not be replacing any panels, just cutting out the small areas and mig welding in some new metal. I hope.
First off, what can I use to stabilize the surface rust on the whole exterior till I repair the mig patches? This will be a long project and I drive the 8 often. Any new products out there to try?
First repair will be to the lower door support area. Sending a photo. Found what I think I need for the support at Classic Enterprises, cowl area reinforcement lower repair section? Any other suggestions appreciated.
Going to pick up some sheet metal for repairs, what gage for side panels and floor pan? I have some 18 gage on hand. It's been abt 15 years since I have done any restoration work so any tips on new technology or materials will help.

Good luck moving forward. Just about everything on it is 18g. I did however use some 16g for the exact area you show. The "best" way to do it is to media blast the area and then epoxy paint it. This is the 100%long term fix. A product such as OsphoCoat can be used to convert the rust to I think iron ferrite which will no longer continue to corrode. On the surface prior to painting it must be properly neutralized or the paint will loose adhesion over time. I treated my frame with it prior to painting it.

Thanks, I will pick up some 16 and 14 gage steel. That drivers side support area is the worst spot on the 8. just started to rust through the side panel. I have used some of the rust conversion products in the past, treated the bed top rail the last time I had the full hardtop off. .

Congrats and good luck with the restoration!

I’m just now wrapping up mine, it’s been a long journey

The 8 is on jacks for a power steering gearbox rebuild. Don't want to start cutting till it is on all 4's. I do need to get some sheet metal when I pick up the gearbox. Going to have some sheared in 4' buy 4, 6 and 10'' strips. Want to have them brake a 90 on some of them. What return should the 90's be incase i need it? 1/2'' ?
I'm trying to patch, really do not want to replace whole panels. Removed the rocker trim today, 3 of 6 t bolts survived.
