Anybody ever have axles sandblasted?

I want to get my axles sandblasted before I take them to get new R&P's. What all should I take off before going to the blaster? Will the sand (or whatever media they use) destroy ball joints and seals?

Ideally, I want to leave the front intact from hub to hub so the knuckles get cleaned up as well and I don't have to remove the ball joints. I will be putting new hubs and rotors on during the rebuild so I don't care what happens to them.

As for the rear, is it OK to leave the backing plates on - it would be nice to get rid of the surface rust? Most likely will be replace the drums and everything inside during the rebuild.

I'd disassemble the whole thing and take the knuckles, backing plates, etc. separately.

Sand and air pressure don't sound like things I'd want around my axles.

I have a spare WT Dana 44 with 4.10's so I will most likey just wire wheel it so I don't have to tear it all down to get it blasted. The rear Dana 44 needs to be re-geared so I will probably strip it for blasting prior to the rebuild. Thanks!

pick yourself up a portable abrasive blaster from harbor freight and some black diamond from tractor supply. you can use a relatively small compressor and save a lot of money over having it blasted.

Yes, I had a rear axle sandblasted. But I stripped it first.
