I am in the process of installing an AX-15 5 Speed manual transmission into my 84' scrambler (258). I am looking for some info about various questions I have for others who have completed this conversion and may have advice. If anyone has completed this conversion, Please reply!

I put the AX15 behind my 351W but not behind the straight 6. I'm sure there are some similarities so if you have any questions then I would be happy to help.

I put an AX15 behind the 258 in my red Scrambler.

I bought the adapter from Novak that uses a stock T176 bell housing. This allowed me to use the stock flywheel, clutch, starter, and clutch linkage. I used their adapter for the Dana 300, which is a clocking ring. I had to clock the transfer case up flat for the stock Dana 300 shifter to clear.

The AX15 shifter just about comes through a stock T5 floor plate. I bent the stock 300 shifter to get it through the original shifter boot.

Fairly simple swap. I'll post a link to my build thread later.

wonderful! that answers pretty much all of the questions i had! thank you, that build thread would be great

Starts around Post #1195.

I have a 1' body lift, which is necessary if you want to use the stock transfer case shifter and the clocking angle I installed my Dana 300 at.
A twin stick might give more clearance, not sure.
I used the stock T5 transmission mount assembly, drilled three new holes in the OEM skid plate, bolted in like it was factory.

Hi... I put in my 81 Scrambler an AX15 behind a 4.0, using the original AX15 bellhousing, changing the stock clutch system for the Wrangler 1997 hydraulic unit and all Wrangler's clutch parts too. I used a clock ring adapter bougth so many time ago to Pirate 4X4, don't know if he are in bussiness still, but was perfet. Had to bend the stock lever a lot, in place I cut it and weld again...36.jpg
Had to do a minor trim at some AX15 fins at the rear, to clear the DANA 300 lever support...

I put the AX-15 behind my 1983 258, and converted from stock mechanical linkage to hydrualic clutch (I recommend this upgrade as well). I couldn't get the right pushrod length with Novak's slave cylinder in the AX-15 bellhousing. They looked into it and said "no one as ever done this exact setup before" and they made me a special aluminum spacer that allowed the slave and pushrod to fit properly. Over the years driving it, I've been hearing this little clicking sound down there when I push in the clutch. Just the other day, it "clicked" a lot louder than usual and the clutch pedal got a lot harder to push. I think I made have had my pushrod length too long or too short. Now I get to tear it apart and see what happened...(!?)

Also, the AX-15 has been great with one small exception. It doesn't seem to synchro very well going into reverse, and I have to double clutch if I want to avoid grinding... Anyone else have this issue?

I did this swap behind a 258 and loved it. I kind of wish I kept it when I went to the 4.8 LS motor. I do have the Novack clocking ring sitting on my shelf if you decide to do the swap I can sell it to you and save you a few bucks.

Yes, mine is like that. But then most Toyota gear boxes I've had do that too. It might just be a Japanese gear box characteristic. I'm so used to it now that I double clutch to reverse without even thinking about it.

Just shift to 4th before reverse, no grind. I have not had to double clutch to get into reverse without grinding on my AX15. Most manuals do not have reverse syncro's, I find a shift to 4th will slow everything down and allow a grind free reverse shift
