Does anyone have experience riding the trails in the Black Hills? I am heading there this summer and deciding if I should drive my Scrambler out or rent a SXS out there.

Should be a bunch here with input. National was in SD a few (maybe 5) years back. I didn't go; so I'm not good input....but......

Yeah, we did the national there and it was a lot of fun. One trail we went on our guide sort of downplayed how hard the trail was and I think some of us were beyond where we wanted to be (me, considering I had to drive back to MI). I didn't have any issue, but we has some real fun on that ride  I think there's tons out there you can do reasonably in the Scrambler though, that was just our guide IMO.

I think you'd need to decide if the stress of having to drive home (I am assuming from the way you said it) is worth it. As someone who basically ALWAYS has to drive home, it's both a thrill and stress to know that you've got deal with whatever goes wrong to get back.

Personally, if this were a family vacation, I'd go the SXS route for the sake of knowing you're good no matter what.

Thanks. It’s just me so I wouldn’t be spoiling a family vacation. I have driven my Srambler out there before. I live in MN so it’s about a 10 hr trip. My sister and BIL will probably be towing their SXS out so I would have some back up. I have an uncle there who is giving me some hardwood lumber I would need my pick up to haul but my BIL said he would haul it. I’ll probably drive the Jeep as you said for the adventure. I found a fb group that should be able to help with specific trails.

Oh, then go for it... You should be able to find anything you want. The only concern I'd have in that situation is if the sister/BIL want to go harder in their SxS than you.

Post pictures!

Take the Jeep !! Take the pictures !! Make the memories !!
I’m taking the Jeep. Going second week of September. Not having much luck getting info on trails. I know they are all shown on the Avenza maps but I would like info from someone who could point me to some fairly easy trails with sights to see.

I would like to make it up there also. If you get some info please post it up here for future use please. That sounds like a great time of year for up that way. Maybe just starting to cool off some.

We rented a nice Airbnb just south of Lead. Saturday we ran some tougher trails. The video is the trail to Custer peak. It is as gnarly a trail as I wanted to try with my stock Jeep, knowing I had almost 500 miles to drive home. I didn't see any other non UTVs on this trail. Sunday we drove mainly gravel roads site seeing in the Nemo area. Stopped for a beer and got to see the end of the Vikings big win. It's a beautiful place. Going now we avoided big crowds which could be an issue on the trails as there aren't many places to move over on some of the trails. Seems like the Lead/Custer area is kind of the hub for the most used trails. We used the paper maps and Avenza app.
Over 1200 miles round trip. No issues although my throw out bearing started to chirp so that will be a winter project. Drove 65-70. 2 tanks over 17MPG and a couple 14-16 in strong side winds. Hit 85 passing a wide load. Thought jeep ran as good as a carbureted engine in altitude could run. I could lug it down to 500 RPM in low range low and it never stalled. Glad I did it and will do it again but probably in a UTV. I couldn't keep up to them. Had to crawl over or around all the rocks. Very rough ride. Always worrying about bending or breaking something or cutting a sidewall. 10 1/2 hours in the seat fighting the wind both ways makes for a long trip.
