Drivers window replacement

I have a new drivers side window coming. Any tips or tricks to make replacing any easier. I'm assuming it comes out the top.

I took mine to a glass shop! Seems like I paid about $35 for the glass and $60 for the install. If I had bought the glass from the shop and let them install it, it would have been about $200.

"easy" is kind of subjective. If you can "easily" gank the rails out in additon to the vent window, it is no problem! If it looks like it will be a knuckle busting pain in the ***, get a glass shop to do it on the cheap. :)

I recently pulled mine during the tear-down for restore of my '8. It was really not bad at all, much simpler than working on a more modern door. If you are used to doing general fix-it work on your Cj then the window should be no problem. With the window down do the following. Remove the crank handle, door trim panel (carefully, they are held in with plastic retainers) and the upper window seals/gasket (again, carefully so not to damage them). After that there are 3 or 4 screws that hold the vent window in place and it will come out as a whole unit. You will have to wiggle, pivot and rotate it a little to free it. Finally, there are a variety of screws that hold the entire regulator unit, with glass, in place. I seem to remember they were all silver in color (on mine) and looked obvious as screws that held the tracks in place. The whole unit should come out the top of the door with some gentle wiglling and pivoting. Don't force anything along the way.
There are probaby better write-ups on the window removal here at this forum but this is an overview and hopefully helps cover the main tasks.

Good luck, post how it goes,
Sincerely,

I did my driver side a couple months ago, I think I found good instructions online. I can't find the link right now, but it is also covered in the chilton or haynes manuals. Not a bad job, my old one was shattered so removal was with a shopvac. Remove the inside panel, the vent window, the 2 screws that hold in to the regulator arm. The hardest thing for me was carefuly getting the vent window back in without breaking the new glass, definitely something to worry about.:D A couple weeks later I got new outer door handles and had to take it back out again and it was much easier the second time, and third when I did the passenger side handle.
While you have it apart it is also a good time to replace handles or weatherstrip too.
Not a terrible job, you just have to be careful and take your time, do it once and you'll know how to do it forever.

UPS left me a new window today. Started on it. Spent most of the time figuring out how to get the window out. Finally figured out to take the chrome upright guide between the window and vent loose.
As said before:
Remove the door handle
Remove the window crank handle
Take off the door panel
Remove the screw on the top of the door frame holding the chrome upright guide
Remove the screws holding the chrome upright guide at the bottom
I put a piece of duct tape on the doof frame to keep from scratching the paint as you have to really move the guide around a lot.
Work the guide over at the top and remove the vent window. It takes some wiggling to get it to come loose.
After you get the vent window out.
Remove the 2 screws holding the window glass to the track. The screws just screw into the plastic inserts. This kind of puzzled me at first. Just hold on to the plastic insert while turning the screw.
Pull the window out of the top while wiggling it and pushing the guide forward.
Putting the main window in was easier than installing the vent back in.
I have included a picture after removing the glass preparing to install new window.
Not too bad of a job just tedious.
Also installed a new cylinder lock so I would have a key and back slider from GR8tops while I was at it.

Looks great! How well did the slider install? I am wanting one of these, too. I had noticed that they sell the same gasket whether you got the Type-A or Type-B glass and wondered how well the "uni-fit" gasket worked...I will need a Type-A slider for mine.

Sincerely,

The GR8 Top slider went in perfectly. I used my old gasket and it did just fine. I actually did the job by myself. Would have been a little easier with someone outside to hold the window up to the cab. Great product.

Great job on that driver side window. Look like a pro did it. Did you put on that rear sliding glass window?

Anyone one have a extra passenger side or driver side( I think they should be the same) bottom glass bracket they would like to sell me? Bracket is attached to the bottom of the glass.
