Hello:
I have an inline 6 258 and I need to replace the fan belt but cannot see how to loose in it to replace it.
I have removed the power steering belt and the belt from the alternator, just cant loosen anything to remove the actual fan belt.
DO I NEED TO REMOVE THE FAN??
Cheers.
Wayne.

Wayne, not really understanding the problem. If the alternator is loosened and the belt is removed from the alternator and crank pulley you should be able to weave the belt around the fan blades individually to eventually get it off of the blade near the radiator. Do your belts look like one of the layouts shown below?

Thank you so very much.
My belts do not look like that.
I have the large belt in the rear (The one I need to change)
A belt on the right - goes from the power steering and up to a driver pulley (if that is what its called)?
On the left a belt goes from the alternator to the center of the fan.
I do not have A/C.

With the V-belt system all of the belts run from the crankshaft pulley to drive the accessories. It could be possible that yours had accessories that are no longer there, or the belts were routed wrong sometime in the past.
This thread has some pics and more info on belts.

Maybe it can help.
I'm out of town until next week, so I can't get pics of my setup on my '83 that I think has the same options as yours.

This is weird I thought taking a fan belt of would be easy !!
I have attached a diagram of my belts (not sure if it will come out in color?) - Basically I have three belts. It is the red belt - from power steering to fan pulley to drive pulley back to power steering that I am trying to remove...
I have the read the link, thanks.
All my belts line up.
Question - is your larger belt (closets to the motor) go over 3 pulleys??

I'm confused as I expect many are. First post said you removed the power steering belt. Last post said that is the one you can't remove. Now that that is clear, the adjustment for that belt is in the power steering mounting. There is a handful of bolts to loosen and probably a square hole for a 1/2" ratchet to fit into for adjustment. If you don't get all the bolts loose, it won't move. Your idler pulley has no function. Might as well put that on a shelf.

Cool and many thanks.

So I need to totally remover the power steering mounting bracket in order to remove the large belt (the one that is worn) that is closest to the block (inside pulley)

I tried this and the power steering bracket did not budge, so I either missed a bolt, or its rusted on??

You'll see the cast bracket at the back of the power steering pump with the square hole in it and probably two bolts. But many bolts have to be loosened for it to move and adjust.

I will get back on it this week. I really appreciate your help.
