full door latch mechanism - what type of oil / lube?

My full doors were not acting right so I decided to take the latch back out and degrease in some solvent. I let them soak for a couple hours in 409 and they came out fairly clean. I was able to scratch off the remaining gunk left over fromt the lube used at the factory that has gummed up over the years.

My question - what is the best "gunk" to re-apply? I was thinking some white lithium grease.

Don't even think about white lithium.. When it get real cold out that stuff freezes and none of the rods will move.. I had to degrees the door again in the middle of winter to make the key turn.. :mad:

So what have you used to replace it? Fortunately mine stays in the garage and it doesn't get bitter cold here but I don't want to have to do this over again in a few years.
 
A lock smith in Alaska gave me these instructions for doing all vehicle locks.

Use brake or carb cleaner to flush the lock and latch assembly.

Come back with Prolube to lubricate both lock and latch.

He emphadized, NEVER use any form of grease or WD40 on door latches or lock. They both attract dirt and especually the grease do not work well at low temperatures.

One of my employees lock was stuck on his old Chev truck. I sprayed brake clean into the lock and the latch followed up with the Prolube. Two years ago and working great.

I don't even have a can of WD40 jn the garags any more.
 
not much i used light machine oil on the joints and closed it up... they work fine... last year it snowed over here every weekend and didnt have a problem..
 
Good to know on that Prolube. I've never heard of it. Will have to google it.

I've taken my doors down 1/2 dozen times from them freezing up in the winter. Nothing like pulling on the handle and having it pop out when the lever overrides the cam. Door doesn't open, and the outer handle is poking out and useless.

Prolube work on the window tracks too? My doors on my green CJ I can almost spin the doors down with one finger. On my tan Jeep you have to be a roid freak to get them to roll down.
