GM 6L80 Automatic Transmission

Has anyone put a6L80 6 speed transmission in their scrambler? It has a 4.03 first gear compared to 3.06 for the 4L60e.

Just curious about how well it fits and how hard the conversion is to the transfer case. I also understand that it needs a Gen IV LS engine (or newer).

If I went auto, I was going to do the 6L80, but stuck with a manual because CJ. They really aren't much bigger overall than a 4L80, so fitment shouldn't be a huge issue. Wiring and getting everything to play nice is a little more complicated, especially if you want tapshift. I had a buddy do a 6.0-6L80 in a JK build not too long ago. He had it going in no time thanks to his Gen III experience, but never could get the tapshift to play nice. I think it's something to do with speed sensors and the overall computer protocol during the VATS sweep. As far as adaptation to a transfer case, I think it's fairly straightforward, just as long as you don't accidently pick up a HD variant with the bigger odd spline output shafts.
 
Thanks for the input! I know there can be issues with the 4L80 with the front drive shaft so was wondering if there was the same issue on the the 6 speed.

I wouldn't mind having a standard tarns, but my Scrambler came with an automatic transmission from the factory, so I'm willing to keep it that way (though still weighing options)
 
John Spears at Speartech was a great help when I did a 6L90E conversion in a 60’s LeSabre. The computer is in the valve body and has to have the same vin flashed as the engine. Long story but John got it going.

I have a 4L80E going in my red Scrambler. It’s a bit tight with a clocked 241C transfer case. I will have to used a small diameter front shaft. It would be easier with a 4” lift- I have a 2” and the only time I’m really worried is at full compression.
