Half Top with Shoulder harness

Did the half tops come in two styles? One with holes for shoulder straps, and one without? I have seen pictures of half tops that appear to have holes in them for shoulder straps, but do not know if this was a factory option or people just cutting holes in there tops to accommodate the shoulder straps.

Thank you for any info.

81 & 82 had lap belts only. 83 & on had the shoulder harness added. So 83 & on tops have holes for the shoulder harness to anchor to the roll bar.

Thank you for the reply, appreciate the info.

Will all year half tops fit each year of the Scrambler? Can a 81 or 82 half top be drilled out to fit an 83 with a hole saw?

Thanks again.

No, the Rollbars are slightly different in order to accomidate the shoulder belts. They are closer to the top so there is not as big of a space between the top and rollbar. All tops will fit on all Scramblers but if you want to add the shoulder belts, you need an '83 and up rollbar and top. Of course, anything can be modified to work I suppose.

I have an 83 Scrambler with an 82 roll bar, but I am running the Rock Hard In Cab Roll Cage, so I have shoulder belts. They are mounted to the Rock Hard Rear Hoop, which is inside the cab:thumbsup:

I have an '81 Scrambler with an 81 half top. I welded inserts into my rollbar before painting. I am adding shoulder belts, and will post up photos of the process once completed.

I plan to drill through the top in the exact location of the rollbar inserts. Then my shoulder belts will bolt through the top and into the rollbar. I plan rubber grommets in the top, and a piece of black hose (or something similar) to cover the bolt before it threads into the rollbar.

Like Polarfire said, yes, anything can be modified, and in this case, it should look very close to factory....if my planning works out.

I'll post up pics when I get the top on- which may be a few weeks....In the interim, there are photos of my rollbar inserts over within my build thread.

This is all very helpful... I have an 81 with an 83 top. The holes are in the top but not in the roll bar. My current idea is to run a LONG eye bolt completely thru the roll bar and nut it on the back side. I saw it on another scrambler. Kind of a Jenky idea, but with my shorty seats and lap belts my baby is a rolling death trap.

Gary...Where did you get the inserts for the roll cage.

Actually, 1982 was a transition year for shoulder belts. The later 82s came with shoulder belts and the early 82s came with lap belts. There is a thread here that shows the approximate serial number where the transition occurred. My 82 came with factory shoulder belts.

Probably more detail than you wanted, but I like to keep these small items accurate. :)

Im looking at putting an 83 roll bar in my 81... so this is a timely thread... are the mounting holes the same for the differeent year roll bars, did they bend the bars a bit to get them closer to the top? If it wont fit my mounting holes I'll stick with the lap belts.. I have a roll bar on "hold" for pick up but if its not going to fit I'll cancel the order..
