Jeep cj7 83 right hand drive 4x4 5 sp british export - part II

Looking great! :thumbsup:

BUT... your completion date is past the Nationals in June??? :shrug: :wave:

I am trying my best to move this along... my hands aren't working too well this morning. Last night it was 3 degrees... the heater tried to keep up, but never heated up the frame, and that is what I was working on primarily... and the beer is running now, so nothing to help keep me warm ;)

Here is where I am at... more of an update later, but just finally got some pics posted to the website

Also, here is the welding burn I got... welding was done, was cleaning up and forgot how hot the metal was

IMG_7244-1.jpg

Also, the fix for the "Jeep Lean" courtesy of JerseyJeeps a long time ago.

More later, time to go out and do more work on the plumbing and gas tank!

Nasty Gas Tank Cleaning time.

I can't believe how much gunk was wedged in between the gas tank when I took it out and now that I clean the rubber parts and the gas tank how much sludge accumulated.

I have to fix the center strap before I can stab it in. They don't remake it unfortunately.

I took an aftermarket 15-gallon strap and welded in a spacer. I don't have a good picture, but it turned out perfectly.

I welded on some threaded rod last night and cleaned it up and gave it a coat of paint, we will see tomorrow if it all works out and I can use it.

I then put the motor mounts on and realized I have some plumbing re-work to do.
IMG_7289-1.jpg

I hope to get the motor stabbed back in tomorrow... fingers crossed

What you gonna do with the brake lines to the master cylinder or can you just extend them like Jeep did on mine?

I kept the extensions, they were in good enough shape... they aren't stainless and braided, but they are the right length and bolt to the firewall, so it is the right play.

Looking good CB, makes me want to crack on with my going nowhere fast project!!!
Where was your chassis date stamp? was it on the front cross member?,i have never seen one on my chassis but then again haven't really been looking for it either:)

So, I checked over every square inch of the frame for the VIN and couldn't find it. I was specifically looking on the rear frame rails near the rear axle bump up on top of the frame.

After many hours yesterday chasing the engine around the garage and finally getting it stabbed in, I found this right when my patience was about to run out.

IMG_7303-1.jpg

It is located right in front of the front brake hose mount on the RHD driver side, or LHD passenger side (just for clarification).

It matches up to the export tag.

cb

PS> The interesting part in the VIN I guess is that it went out with a "Z" and came back as a "C"... now, that tells me that either they messed up and stamped Z by mistake as the engine codes were:

B = 151ci
L = 232ci
C = 258ci
H = 304ci
F = Diesel

in 1983 for the Export, or I am missing something. It did have a 258 Petrol engine when it left, so it is just another little mystery.

As for the update... fuel system in, plubming done, front brakes updated with new hoses and hardware, got the torque stabilizer on and the new tranny mount in and now I have to hook it all up.

I get to clean mine this week. Yea! :rolleyes:

Just make sure it is all well ventilated... it was mostly gas, dirt, oil... but when mixed in scalding hot water to help stave off the frozen hands of being in the garage... it was an overpowering concoction!

Chiseled out the trailer last night and got it out of its icy tomb and loaded up the tub on it... going to take it tomorrow (now in a snow storm) to get it sandblasted on the bottom and firewall.
Taking the roll bar, front top of the bumper (only half got done last time due to it being powdercoated), the hood and new tailgate and the old firewall to be blasted as well.

It will be a good starting point to start doing the metal work on the Jeep RHD firewall conversion and underbody repair... plus I want to undercoat the body properly and right now it is only half and half and it is 20+ years old for that tub.

So, hopefully by noon tomorrow I will be home with all the good and get back to working on it.

This week has resulted in 1 ER trip for my little one, and 2 days off work to stay home with her and finally back to the walk in clinic to find out the dreaded double ear infection with blood to boot! I am looking forward to our annual Christmas tree burning on Saturday... we need a little relaxing downtime!

cb

Sandblaster cancelled for today, attempt again tomorrow! Ran out and grabbed a tarp and covered the body so it would be clear and clean for tomorrow.

A few pictures from this past week as I am snowed in and waiting for it to stop, to go out and plow/shovel so we can have the tree burning party tonight!
Also, the kids want to go out and play, so that is the plan in a little while.

Anyway, only had a few hours this week, so a lot of buttoning up was done.

Lower mount had no threads, only on one side, very strange...

Drive shafts were installed w/ new u-bolt hardware
IMG_7306-1.jpg

New Transmission mount and stabilizer stud are in and working well (had to modify slightly to get it to work as the new poly mount was 3/4" taller than the old smoooshed one)
IMG_7307-1.jpg

Sitting pretty, waiting on fuel sender before I can hook up the new rubber lines and hose clamps for the fuel tank.
IMG_7313-1.jpg

Body waiting for blasting, which is now tomorrow... going to also get the roll bar, tailgate, front euro bumper, old firewall and hood blasted to see what we are working with.
I have to remove some hardware on those various pieces today to get it ready.
IMG_7314-1.jpg

That is about it, I hope to get some work in tomorrow, but probably not, I won't be back from the blaster until probably after noon and with getting up at 5 to get all the snow cleared to get there on time, not much in the way of energy and time will be left :(

So, it has been a somewhat busy week... after the delay of this:

We moved onto getting some parts blasted in the winter weather

Before I headed out in to that, I used Polarfires tutelage on plastic tank and avoided some pitfalls.

It was cold out, but I had the heater on and it did a pretty decent job.
I am playing with colors and I like this green... it is Hunter Green and is a bit different than the original, but I needed to get some paint/primer on this thing to not let it rust.

I removed the plate from the RHD tub as it is needed on the new tub... it as a mess and a TON of spot welds... 25 by my count.

Taking the removed piece to the new tub and we have a lot of work to do
IMG_7357-1.jpg

The plan is to remove the plate from the new tub on the other side, cut it all out and graft in a new piece... same thing on the side without the plate... then weld the plate in and start cutting holes.
I wish I knew that this YJ RHD was so much different than the CJ RHD one as I would have just used a local LHD tub and done the same and not have to drive to VA to get it :(

cb

The original tub is just in a lot worse shape than I had thought... this is where blasting helps to reveal it, but also shows how much work there is to do still.
I still have all the under body fixing to do to the tub as well as the firewall work... that is the plan going forward over the next few weeks.

The last of the paint photos and a shot of the underside of the tub that was blasted to show where there are issues... only one more issue showed up, so that is good news.

Progress is good. I like that green on the 5s and 7s, and especially on the 8s with the orange / yellow stripe kit. :thumbsup:

Keep up the good work and stay warm. :wave:
