Laredo grab bars

I echo that, Kim. Appreciate all your work on things like the grab bars and bumper caps. I love my aluminum end caps! Took me a while to get the right coating but they work great.

The paint rep showed up with his color books and spent hours looking for colors used over the last 30 years that would match. This didn't work out so well. No air for him to try spraying colors. I thought he would have some fleet solid color chips to look at, but no. Nice guy. Mixed up some blue, added to a garnet the NAPA guy mixed, and lightened up my nutmeg color. So I went home and tried them out. Blue was way to bright. Garnet was way to brown. Nutmeg was better but still needing more yellow. It's the color of the binding on a nutmeg sun visor but that's not the main color I'm shooting for. The flattening additive is a creamy color and I think it dulls some colors. The wet nutmeg looks so right on until it's mixed and sprayed. I also mixed up the exterior slate blue and exterior garnet with the flattening additive and they were closer than the paint that was mixed today. I can paint but mixing colors is not my thing. There went Saturday. I'll try again next week. But hey, I put another coat on the black handles so they are ready to go. Five steps sideways, one step forward. That's progress.

Kim, thank you again for doing this! If you can get a formulas for these you will provide for another generation of CJ drivers who want to keep their interiors correct.

Still getting paints and leather and thread for the colored handles sorted out. I have some BLACK grab bars finished. I used semi gloss black paint and a low gloss leather as original. These are done as the originals and possibly a little tighter . . . no wrinkles. Anyone on this forum that wants one, can get a BLACK one for $220 paypal delivered priority mail IF they promise to return to me an original (non-covered) grab handle for the core. Or, $250 outright.
Went through another round of mixing paints and I'm getting closer. Slate Blue just wasn't coming out right, so I ordered some through the mail (about 3X the usual cost) but if the color is right, it will be worth it.

You are going to have to get the different tints in the different colors then make your own adds and spray them out on cards yourself. A paint shop will never spend enough time to match the paints exact. When I matched Olympic white on a 12k mile CJ recently it took tinting 10 times and spraying out 10 different cards till I got it to about a 9-9.5 out of 10 match. I even started with a color match from a camera which is supposed to get it close to engine with.

Noticed on ebay that one of the members here has a NOS nutmeg grab bar for $1000. And a NOS Honey one for $750. Good move. Anyone else that has original leather covered grab bars that wants to sell them for big bucks, now would be the time.
I'm hoping this paint source through the mail is as good as they say on matching original colors. I should know when the blue arrives. I've sprayed so many times trying to get the right tint that I would just pay the extra if the colors are correct.

Notice that the Honey bar has a greenish tint to it. One of mine was like that. Guess the color fades or changes tint over time

Had Napa adjust the nutmeg paint today. It's been below freezing these last few days. Not so good for painting. My slate blue interior paint is scheduled to arrive next Wednesday. Then I'll see how good this source is. Sold one of the black grab bars on ebay today for $300 shipping included. Listed another one. Got to get some money back so I can order the leather for the colors. I don't post pictures on this site or I would, but you can see a black one on ebay if you like.

I have 5 black leather covered grab handles. In the spirit of the holidays, if you would like one, say so with a reply, and send me an oem grab bar and some useable CJ related parts that you no longer need. I have 3 body-and-frame Scramblers that I've been collecting parts for. Maybe you have an extra dash, steering wheel, console, lights, steps, small parts or anything small or light enough to not cost a fortune to ship. I have a sixth one but the paint is gloss and the leather has some gloss to it . . . it was the first one I made in the two piece design. So, weather you are short on cash or just have some parts you don't need anymore, now is the time to take a number. And if you don't want to remove a grab handle from your CJ until you have the new one, no problem. Once you receive the new one, then remove the old one and send whatever parts you want.

Man, I'd love one but I'm holding out for a Slate Blue!

Wow that sounds like a great deal, I can't think of anything off my jeep that anyone would want. The only thing left in the attic is my original carburetor and air cleaner i stuck in a box probably 25 years ago. Not even sure why I saved it actually

That's the ebay price. $220 exchange is the forum price. Holiday price if you don't keep extra parts laying around, just pick a number you can afford and it will be the right one with your exchange.

$300 shipped?

jbjeeps has taken the first spot. . .and your inbox is full.
DeLuke has got the second one.

Got the slate blue paint today . . . came early. Tried it out and it is correct. This is a good source. Napa tweaked the nutmeg for me the other day and I tried it again. Better but not quite right. I think I'll order it from this place and probably the garnet, too. They seem to know the colors. For the price they charge, they better. Ordered the honey leather and thread today. Still searching for the closest nutmeg and slate blue leather I can find. My painter friend gave me a tip on making low gloss paint. Just ad talcum powder to the paint. That would have been cheaper than the flattening additive I bought.

jbjeeps your inbox is full again. Expected Priority Mail Delivery is 12-28. Slow this time of year.

Got the samples today, I will try to get to them over the next few days to see about getting the garnet out for matching :)
