Lift Questions

Looking for some info about my scrambler. I just put a bunch of parts together not knowing what I really have. I’m leaning on a soa set up. I don’t know anything about the leaf springs or shackles. Lift wise. # 1 It has the AMC 20/Dana 30 still just by putting the spring mounts on top of axle does that give me 2 1/2” of lift? I was looking at using a YJ 5 spring leaf front and back. I have a bunch of questions but I will keep this short. I want to figure out the amount of lift for 35’s. The other problem I have is it has the Poison Spyder full quarter panel on it. It’s 1/4” steel and it sags in the rear. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Just moving the springs from under the axles to the top typically gives 5” of lift. Steering and axle wrap will be issues will need attention with a spring over (SOA) lift. Also one piece axle shafts for the AMC 20 and proper gears to match your tire size will be considerations too.

I probably should have added this in the post but my fingers get tired. Lol. I have one piece axles and disc brakes in the back. Both rears have 4.56 with Detroit lockers. I’m going to make a truss and weld the tubes on the 20. Hopefully that will be enough. I have been reading up on the steering issues. Axle wrap not really sure on that one yet. I was reading about making a little longer spring perch in the back. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I’m not sure if I was to make a traction bar set up if it would take away from the flex. The only thing I have to be careful with is that it will go in and out of a normal garage door. Lol. I know I can figure out the other things with some more research and help with everyone. I want to try and have most of the concept figured out so nothing looks like an afterthought. Any ideas, pictures are greatly appreciated. It’s going to be a great project to do with my two daughters. I will throw this out there. I’m located in Monticello Minnesota if anyone is around there. Thanks for your response.

SOA typically seems attractive from a price standpoint considering you reuse your existing springs. That said, to do it properly takes lots of time. Honestly... save frustration and problems. Buy a quality 4" lift. You will be able to bolt it in and take off enjoying your jeep right away.

I run a 4" BDS lift and am very happy with it. Flexes and rides pretty darn good. I also run 35" tires. Your fenders in the front should clear fine. You may have to trim a little in the rear wheel arch for tire clearance.

With tires that would look decent with a SOA, I think you can kiss fitting through normal garage doors goodbye(might make it with a screw style opener if you have an opener)

I have an SOA and 35" tires on my Scrambler. You can see some pics including the flex at my rebuild thread here:

I use the Rubicon Express RE1445 6 leaf springs. They are YJ springs with a 1.5" lift. Done with SOA they get you up there pretty good. I also have a 1" body lift. They also make 5 leave versions as the RE1444.

I had the spring perches welded on the Dynatrac D44 and D60 axles that I put on it in 1998. I originally did 4" superlift springs under the axles. Was not happy with the flex and ride. The SOA rides pretty smooth for me.

The SOA will require a good amount of work. A traction bar is needed for the wrap. I have one on in those flex pics on my rebuild thread. WFO concepts makes one you can buy and weld on.

I fit in my garage with very little room to spare when my soft top is on. The bows stick up a bit over the roll cage. I would do 37's if I could fit in the garage...

Cool thanks for the response. Is there anyway that you can get a measurement from the ground to the tallest part of the top. That would kinda give me an idea how high it would be right?

I was just checking out yet your build. I love it. Where did you get the tail lights? I like them better than the flush mount ones I have.

An additional thought, if you have narrow track axles, don’t spend any additional money or time on them if you plan to go SOA. You’ll end up too narrow to support the height reasonably. Even wide track may be marginal.

I bought them from Amazon. They are $20.00 each now. I think I got them slightly lower.

They do NOT have backup lights or side markers. I am putting separate backup lights in my bumper. And they are plastic so they will crack if you hit them on just about anything. But they are cheap and very bright.

I can't get that measurement now as I don't have the roll cage in or the soft top on.

I can tell you my garage door is 7' tall. And it fits in with 35" tires aired up to 25 PSI and with the Kayline full soft top on. However there is only 1-2 inches to spare. See below for a pic with the top on:

I had a very similar set-up (SOA on Rubicon Express SOA Springs) on my CJ-7 and could also get into my 7' garage w/o issue.

They are cool looking. Mine are flush mount
@Horace : I bought a Parts Mike anti-wrap bar for my SOA CJ-7 and did not get it installed before I sold the Jeep. It's yours if you want it - just pay for shipping.
