MDJuan Tubs

it seems that this thread might need to be revisited. Has there been any updates made to the products to report on? Plus with Christmas on the horizon might be a few gifts needed by someone.

super late finding this thread! And I am getting ready to start restoring two bodies so all this info has been great. One thing I'd like to add in regard to the "JEEP" being stamped on the sides. On several of my past CJ's that area actually had "JOOP" stamped there and relied on the vinyl to spell things right. Is "JOOP" still a copy write problem?

My MD Juan tub came with no writing stamped in the side at all but that was 18months ago the situation may of changed.
I have also seen original YJ tubs that have JOOP stamped in them, don't know if they are all like that, i think someone must of got lazy in the Jeep press toolroom in 1987ish ;)

Later model CJs are also "Joops." The '85 CJ-7 my father bought new (and I still have) is a "Joop," and every YJ I've ever seen was too. Interestingly, one of my '84 postals is a "Joop" on one side and a "Jeep" on the other.

Ha,ha really so it must of been your postal that broke the presses tooling that day then:D.

Seriously thats either epic Amc quality control or maybe a repair from a later Jeep, but i really hope its the former as it seems to be the Amc way in the 80s.

Nobody has done any body work on it. It still had the original (trashed) carpet, broken shift gate, postal bulkhead, and OEM postal seat. The stampings are unquestionably OEM.

Towards the end they saved money by not sharpening dies as they wore down. Cheaper just to let if go to JOOP. When I found that out i raced around all our CJs and found on one it has JOOP on one side and jeep on the other. That would make it a jeop or joep. Maybe they all
Went to Europe ;)

As the legend goes not only did they change to the joop as a cost-cutting measure what i hear they had problems with the ee's falling off the tub so it was easier to place the ee's onto the oo's and the change was made. I have seen a 1984 Jeep scrambler owned by a gentleman on this forum and he has one jeep side and one joop side and it is all original. I believe the change was made late 84 as all 85-86s I have seen all have joop sides.

So MD can stamp joop into the tubs with out the fear of copyright infringement and all the while our builds maintain a factory look.....or are they actually stamping jeep now?

that's why I brought that up earlier.(#344)
I bet it's not an infringement at all.....but then I'm not an attorney.

Does MD Jaun make a replacement front grill ? Or anyone else? I repaired mine 29 years ago when a SOB tossed something off an interstate overpass as I was driving.

I read somewhere that they were not going to do a steel bulkhead. Too many complex bends. Used OEM can be found, saw one on ebay recently. Someone is doing new fiberglass too - I think.

I saw the fiberglass ones.

Probably not a bad idea. I was going to try to repair mine (entire bottom is rusted through) but it looks like too much fab work.

I found a guy (rudy?) that has seven of them, but he wants a LOT for his - 4-800/ea.

Just seems like if a press was made these would be a breeze to stamp out, but I obviously have no idea what kind of work is involved. Perhaps I've found a niche market for myself!!!!

The need for them would be potentially all the possible Scramblers made, minus the crashes, add in the ones that want them for a YJ/CJ7 conversion to a half cab and then you wold probably be in the < 10,000 range, as a lot still held up and are in nice shape... so not sure what the tooling would cost, but more than likely more than what the ROI would be.

IMO the market for them is a few dozen, tops. Everyone wants something until it's time to pay up for it. Seen it happen over and over and over here.

There is absolutely no chance in the world that anyone could ever make money doing it in anything other than low-production fiberglass. Matt (forum owner) and GR8TOPS would be rolling in money anything close to 10k people -- even 1k -- wanted replacement bulkheads.

Consider that, of all of the Scramblers left, a significant fraction of them aren't even interested in running the bulkhead.
