Mikes 81 mongrel scrambler

If you're keeping the TJ engine and related engine compartment accessories, before you go too far do some measurements. The TJ engine compartment is several inches longer than the CJ engine compartment, so you may not have the room to fit everything under the CJ front clip. This photo compares stock CJ and TJ hoods:

The custom "CJ" hood I made for the CJ Kit is several inches longer than the factory CJ hood.

I also made longer "CJ style" fenders in fiberglass to match the longer hood, and custom fiberglass inner fenders to mate with shape of the CJ grille and also provide all the stock mounting locations for the inner fender mounted accessories, so you might want to plan ahead for how you'll mount all the inner fender accessories if you're going to use the stock CJ fenders.

BTW the TJ radiator and A/C condenser can be fitted to the CJ grille with some fairly simple brackets...

Is there a secret to being able to see @jscherb 's photos? I can see the photonames.jpg, but they don't link, or open in my browser.

EDIT: Apparently it's a Firefox thing... I just opened this page in Safari, and I could see all the photos. Weird.

Beautiful work @scherb. I'm really impressed that you were confident enough in your fibreglass work to paint that LJ black. Looks great.

Thanks but I didn't really have a choice - the LJ was black when I bought it :).

Here's hoping Mike is as happy with the results of his project as I have been with mine. Perhaps the detail photos I've posted help him with some of the fitment and conversion issues he'll have to deal with in completing his project.

Didn't see this post until I visited the forum just now, didn't get a notification of the mention.

Yes, I made a custom hood, fenders and cowl panel in fiberglass so all the body lines and curves line up. I used a factory CJ grille; all other parts (hood, inner and outer fenders, cowl panel) are custom fiberglass. I designed it as a bolt-on kit, no mods required to the Jeep.

Always amazed at your skill level with the fiberglass. Have followed your work for years.

Man, as has been said, you have some serious skill!! That turned out beautifully! I'm using metalcloak fenders, and I'm going to stick with my original hood, just rework the hinges for now. The LJ tub will eventually make way for my scrambler tub, and a few other bits and pieces, currently, I just want it running, driving and wheeling as soon as I can possibly get it rolling. Thank you for jumping in here! I really appreciate the insights, and the pictures!!

Got the front end fitted and bolted up. The CJ nose is definitely shorter, but it works with a spal electric rad fan. Not a lot of clearance, but just enough! The metalcloak inners were a bugger to fit, but they’re in there. And the green you see on the inners is 2016 jeep hyper green. That’s the colour of choice. Now to make the hinges work.

The stock 44’s are sold, and I’m just waiting on a single RCV clip to finish them, and the new owner can pick them up. Then I can grab my Currie 60’s and get at the suspension.
