My old 1981 SCRAMBLER returns 25 years later

For now, I'd run a generic non-platinum plug at .035 until you sort things out. That will at least get a standard type part in the mix. You said that you also put a new set of wires on too right? Are any boots close to the header tubes? BTW, where are those engine bay pics?

The wires have been changed........twice. No boots too close or getting burned. It's got the "rams horn" manifold so it's easier than headers.

Totally forgot about the pics. We are heading out for the day with the girls scouts. And the plug wires and battery are still out from doing the springs.

Here is a older pic I had.
The red is were the main harness comes though and runs to the throttle body, The o2 runs straight down from that.
The blue is where the main power, ground, small 18ga power, and small ground are. The keyed power is a shielded wire under the dash.

I'll get some more pics when I get back tonight. I'm hoping to have it back together today.

One other thing I thought of, not sure if I told you. The injectors were swapped right to left at one point. Another time I switched the injector wiring plugs left to right. The uneven stayed the same all the time. When the fuel rail were off I looked for obstructions and tested for flow what I could with shop air.

No EGR.

The manifold Has a heat passage that runs from left to right under/around the carb base that is not hooked up. It has plugs in both ports from GM. It took some research, but I found it is for hot water or exhaust heat for extremely cold climates.

I'm going out now to try and put it back together and get some pics. :fingerscrossed: May have to make dinner to feed the kids. :rotfl:

Folder empty
Not completely back together....no plugs or serp. belt.....but
Here's some pics.
They aren't great, but I added some lables.

I've been running it with the efi and the large cap HEI.
It runs great light load and idle. Wide Open is ok, but not perfect. I've got the learn turned down to 3% and the closed loop at 10% in the 60 kpa and above. That way if it stumbles or misses the table doesn't get corrupted.

I am in South Dakota hunting right now. When I get home the plan is to put in the small cap hei and run it for the season.

I was planning on a lt4 hot cam this winter. Once I get all the parts gathered, I'm going to pull the heads, check everything, and install the cam, lifters, rockers, and maybe intake.

I have the lt4 hotcam 1.6 rollers in my camaro not sure if I would run that in a jeep. Any reason u want that cam?

Sent from my SM-N910P

hot rod magazine tried several cams in the same engine as mine.I've got the dyno charts from them. I'll post them when I get home. We've only got 1 mb Internet here.

Here is the chart I saw. My thought was go to the Roller setup. The torque numbers are similar down lower were I would need them I trail rides and cruising. The upper end in the 3,000 to 5,000 are better were I run my in the dunes. I don't think I'm going to lose anything other than right off idle, and with the 2200 stall converter that's in there it shouldn't be a issue.

What do you guys think?

Not to much to update here. Just been running the Scrambler and playing in the dunes.

It still doesn't run quite right, but I'll get to that this fall. (just gathering some parts right now for that)

In the mean time.... when I run in the dunes doing high speed laps the temp would start to slowly climb. It would come back down, but not too fast. It already has a three core copper radiator that is new with a flex-a-lite 6 blade fan on a Hayden extreme duty clutch. so I did some research and found the thickest, aluminum radiator they make for a CJ. It's from engineered cooling Products in Chicago. It is supposed to cool 600HP.......we'll see how it likes extended high RPM runs with sand radiating heat through it. :uhoh:

Last week on the dunes. (just because everyone likes pics)

New radiator worked great. Kept it cooler than the 3 core copper, and the temp came right back down to the t-stat at 185 when I wasn't running it wide open for extended times :bacon:

Drove the Scrambler to work today. On the way home, rolling about 45 mph on the backroad I had a big bang..shudder....dragging.....NO OVERDRIVE

Ran in in drive the rest of the way. Got home, checked the fluid. It was slightly low so I added a quart (Now it's overfull).

Went for a drive down the road a mile. It never even tried to shift from 3rd. Went I stopped to do a 180, nothing......free rev........put it in and out of gear..........pulled it to 1st. It tried to move..........gave it some gas......... shuddered, banged, squealed, and took off. went back home and pulled it out.

There was no metal in the pan, so it off too the trans man.

I was headed to Siler Lake tomorrow for the weekend. Was planning on doing some scouting on Sunday for the Sand Blast trail ride.......guess I'll put that off for a week.

Super bummer, how many miles were on it??

About 3K this time

It was built back it 2000 with good parts. Ran it for 10 years in my crawler trouble free, Then the converter went out. Had my trans guy that built it freshen it and new converter. Ran it three months, the new Kevlar band had rivets that weren't set and it broke. Fixed that. Ran it one year, the bearing on the lower planetary failed and ate the shaft and HD planetary. Fixed that now it made 2 runs in the crawler last year, and the Scrambler this summer.

I think another mechanical part broke, when it slips it sounds like metal on metal with banging

Trans is back in and working. :headbang:

I need to pull out the Governor and change the weights. I had him put in a adjustable governor because it was shifting to early...............now when it's wide open it hits the rev limiter before it shifts. should be a simple swap of the weights.

and because pictures are good

Had a weekend home and spent a few minutes working on the Jeep. (I know....a jeep that's not done )

I have had several times that I needed my CB and haven't made the time to get it installed.

Finally decided to get going on it...............and found a place that it fit.

In the besttop center council

I've got the power to it, but still have to mount the external speaker and create a "exit hole" for the microphone.

As far as the antenna goes. I'm thinking about making a bracket off the windshield hinge to mount my firestick. That way the coax can go under the windshield frame gasket, and the bracket can use the hinge bolts with no extra drilling in the tub. Also I can hook the antenna under the soft top for go-fast in the dunes so it doesn't beat up the paint.
