OE 85 Scrambler Renegade Stripes

OK folks, need some help. The Scrambler is in the body shop for a complete makeover and I want to bring it back to the way the Jeep God's envisioned it. I have the 85 Jeep brochure but I don't see what the Renegade striping would look like; do any of you have pictures of yours that you can share? I am concerned with the Scrambler emblems on the rear quarter panels, it looks like on the Laredo they are much lower than they are on mine but I don't know that mine are in the right spot. I think they are based on the overspray on mine, I don't think they were moved or replaced but I want to get this right. My Scrambler is white with a black top and the "almond" seats with the embossed CJ on them. Thanks in advance for the help and Merry Christmas.

Tom

Hey Tom, on white your stripes would either be the blues or the red/oranges. As far as the emblems , I see them under the thick black stripe on the Laredo but didn't see em on the renegade , ever. Not to say you couldn't put them there if you wanted. Take a look at this old poster... u can see the emblem under the stripe.

The honey metallic jeep above wears the oranges. There was also reds with orange. And here is the blues on a very rusty 85 i have.

This was very helpful, I think I am just going to skip the emblems all together and go with the strips like those on your blue one. Thanks for taking the time to share your pictures!

Tom

No problem Tom. And I happen to agree with you. I always thought those emblems were a little outta place with the graphics package, a little too busy in my opinion.

My first CJ (still have) was exactly like that Honey Metallic when I bought it. I think I'm going to go back to that color, but I really don't like the "swoosh" down the side on the 85-86. I'm debating doing 84 stripes on mine. I dunno. I will always look at it and thinks it's not correct, but then again, I remember scraping those swooshes off the side because I hated the look.

I don't love the strips on the 85 / 86 either but I am trying to keep in original. I loved the strips I had on my 81 Laredo when I had it, I have been tempted to put Laredo strips on it even though it's not a Laredo.

I've thought about that too. The 85-86 Laredo strips are nice looking.

I'm with you on the "original" thing, but then again, once you scrap the original paint, is it ever going to be original-enough for it to matter?

I agree with of you. The 85-86 stripes, and the lack of scrambler on the hood for the 85s for that matter, was AMC cost cutting. Less stripes, less part numbers, less install time as it went down the line. My biggest complaint of the plain Jane 85-86 Laredo stripes is the lack of upper pin stripe at body edge and around doors. The 80-84 Laredo stripes were just as good as it gets and took so much more time for them to install when you think about it.

I have a black 85 and ordered the stripe like the black one above...

I like those, so lets change the question. Does it rally impact the value of the Scrambler if I change the stripes considering the following:

I am repainting the entire rig - this is the second repaint, I got this from the US government, it was a US forestry vehicle so the current paint is a cheap government paint job but it's the original white color
I have put a new Jasper motor in it
I have put in MOPAR TPI
I have a Borla header to match up with the TPI (both were done when I moved to CA in order to pass emissions - don't judge)
I upgraded my heater blower motor with a motor out of a K5 Blazer
I have put the aluminum bumper ends on my factory step bumper due to lack of availability plastic replacements - thanks Kim!
I took the stamped steel wheels off and put factory chrome wheels on
I put factory side steps on
I am about to put factory rocker covers on

Everything else is stock

So the question remains, once I have the Jeep painted with the factory white color and considering the mods I have done or am about to do is the Jeep even worth considering original any longer of has that shipped sailed and I should just do what I like? Would love opinions on this.

I believe "The Ship Has Sailed" . Sounds like you are constructing an Awesome Jeep though. I am a firm believer that once it is not 100% original, it's not. Something like "Just a Little Bit Pregnant ". :twocents:

Agree...you have a great canvas there to create whatever the end result makes you most happy, go with that. :bacon:

Kinda where I am with the CJ I mentioned. It's 84K, I'm the third owner, but I've had it since 93 so it lived through my teen years. Dash is cut, will be the 3rd repaint (although going back to original), lockers and 2.5" lift added, MC2100, A/C added, T5 will be swapped out for T176, AGR steering box etc etc.

Not original anymore. Might seem like it to someone who doesn't know any better, but Jersey and most of the guys here would pick it to pieces if I ever listed it for sale (which I won't)

OK, lets go another step then.....

If I am not original any longer is there any harm in changing the color all together to a different 85' exterior paint color. I will do it right, top and bottom but it won't match the VIN. Too far?

I don't think so. I changed colors on my CJ back in 1998, and now want it back to the original color. Once original paint is gone, do what you want.

I wouldn't do that. I think I stated that above too

I learned a thing. I never knew there was a CJ8 Renegade. Hmph.
