So now that the suspension links are pretty much done, I've been struggling on what steering box to use. I need a box with a forward swinging arm and preferably mounting outside of the frame so I can have a long drag ling and a long track bar. Then on top of those requirements, I really want to have it power steering too. I got the electric power steering assist box already assuming that I could probably use that but the issue is that I don't want it mounted a long way from the box itself so I don't stress the steering shaft and U-joints. So now the scope has changed a bit. I'm going to find an electric hydraulic power steering pump off of a newer car and figure out how to use that instead. Then if the box does not have enough assist, I can add a ram to the system.
I've been struggling on also finding some high steer arms too. Two suppliers have screwed me so far saying that they had them and then a week later after calling only to find out that they really didn't. I got hooked up with Zuk's Offroad just north of town (which are Suzuki specialists) and he got me a set AND hand delivered them to me. Great people to deal with with for sure.
So now that I acquired a steering box and some high steer arms, I can now get them mounted and build the track bar and finally cycle the suspension. I already see that I'm going to need to re-engineer the passenger side motor mount because the upper link is going to crash into it upon compression. It's hard to predict everything when you have nothing to start with. I'm sure that will not be the only thing that I have to re-engineer.
Oh yea, I forgot about the issue with trying to find a pair of double cardan driveshafts too. I've been hunting for a pair of shafts to use but have quickly figured out that any 1310 Cv driveshaft is way too big for me to fit into the spacing that I have to work with. There's another "what you think will work" will not work in reality. So after some brainstorming, I think I'm going to use some VW bus CV shafts for both the front and rear driveshafts. I'll have to build a total of 4 adapters to get the CV's mounted to the axle flanges and transfer case outputs but I think it's doable. We will see how much pinion movement I have once I cycle the suspension. ;0
