Road Trip Coming

Spent three hours plus unloading the U-Haul this morning. Back is shot. Can't stop though. Going to pick up tools now. I leave for Detroit at 5 AM in the morning for work, so time feels like it's already slipping away from me. Hopefully I can make all this work in time to get the truck trailer and tools back before closing time. I'll try and post some pictures tonight when I have a second to breathe .

Ok, got the horn / steering wheel off... Here is where I am...

I also have one of these, but no idea how it works...

What now?

Screw the tool onto the steering shaft. Then compress that top lock plate to remove the snap ring.

Ok, figured out the compression tool...

image.jpeg

Got the retainer spring off...

image.jpeg

Hand screwed out the hazard flasher activator/button...

image.jpeg

Removed the plastic cover and internal horn assembly...

And unscrewed the three screws holding in the turn signal assembly and moved it aside.

I can now see this area around the ignition cylinder... Is there a trick to removing it?

Un bolt the screw at end of where lock cylinder is about 1 o'clock position. If I remember right they want key in runtil position then pull cylinder out. To put new one in make sure key is in lock (if I remember correctly to keep tumblers in place) now reverse what, you've done,so far

So there's a little catch switch you can jimmy if you stick a flathead (very small one) in the second hole/slot from the right. Then the cylinder slides right out with no more disassembly of the column.

Unfortunately, the lock cylinder didn't fit. They looked identical in size/shape, but the interface between the cylinder and the column is different. (Original on right, new on left) Maybe I got an 85-86?

Regardless, I was able to turn the post with a very small pair of needle nose pliers and get it into the driveway and covered before it rains. Thanks everyone for all the help!

That sucks. On bright side you got the hard work done. Rest is downhill. Glad it's the only hang up.:headbang:

Ok, waiting for ride at airport in Detroit, so here's a couple quick eye candy pics I shot while unloading yesterday...
