In my recently restored '8, I have one nagging issue. While the clutch is fine, the clutch pedal is loose when my foot doesnt rest on it. The rattling is driving me crazy. Is there a spring or some other way to take up this "slack".

Yes, there are two springs:

1) underneath the Jeep, one end hooks to the bellhousing, other end hooks on to clutch release arm
2) under the dash, inside the brake/clutch pedal bracket, there should be a stiff return spring, too

Hope that helps:thumbsup:

Awesome, time to get underneath. Thanks for the insight.

Took a quick look this weekend. The return spring on the pedal assembly is there but seems to be to long as its fully compressed well before the pedal is at the top of its travel.

I did a bit more research. Apparently, after 1982 or 1983, the clutch pedal was modified a bit and the return spring was shortened. Unfortunately, all of the aftermarket springs available are of the longer variety resulting in the "loose" pedal.

Has anyone run into this and found a solution besides cutting and rebending the spring?

Does anyone have a spare shorter spring they want to sell or even just measure for reference?

Am I full of it and there never was a change to a shorter spring?

Just encountered this problem. Based on what I have it clearly looks like a shorter spring. Looks like you have a pin there where the spring hooks into ?

Anyone ever find the shorter spring anywhere? Mine snapped and landed in my floorboard while driving the forest last week.

I put a hydraulic clutch and pedal tree from a YJ in mine: best mod ever. No springs on the pedal tree, just the clutch fork.
