Speedhut gauge install, wiring update/fix, switchplate

I guess I wasn't clear (as usual my wife would say). I meant somehow run them inline with the Speedhut gauges and then you wouldn't need the headlight dimmer?

I think the best you would do would be to use the headlight dimmer to feed the Speedhut inverter and then replace the warning light bulbs with LEDs. Then dimming with the stock switch dims both and you don't need the Speedhut dimmer except to try to match up the brightness at full blast (as long as the Speedhut lights are the brighter ones).

The inverter is putting out AC. So unless you found lights to put in the warning lights to work with its output, I don't see how it could work.

I'm sure you would have told in due time but I'm an impatient fella. What's the fuse block for? I went to the Blue Seas web site, looked under products, but didn't see the USB plug or 12volt plug until I searched for them specifically. Odd I think. I think I know what next winters project will b?

:) I'm setting the fuse block up as the under dash feed for both straight battery and switched power. I want to move as much off of stock wiring as I can. Under the hood, I kept ALL the circuits in the XJ power distribution block. So the ultimate goal is to have the chassis/engine stuff all on that and the interior stuff all on this block.

I've already made progress with the under hood items. Slow progress, but progress.

All of this was started by the starter relay wire meltdown/short to +12V that caused the starter to engage and run constantly as I was driving down the road. I've never trusted the stock wires since that (part of my distrust of the heater wiring I mentioned earlier).

Didn't have enough time to get out in the garage to want to bundle up that much to do anything, so I got into labeling all the wires with my DYMO Rhino labeler. I love this thing and don't know how I got along without it.

Wherever I could, I used the shrink wrap (the black shrink tube made up for the size of the white shrink wrap I had for the labeler) and on the ones where I couldn't disassemble the connector I used a silver permanent polyester label for a flag.

Got almost all of the wiring ready for the gauges I have. Decided I have to bite the bullet on the weather pack connector set and crimp tool. Ordering tonight. Also realized I'm going to have to add the dimmer/switched12V/ground sets for the two gauges I don't have yet so I can't fully finish out that part of the harness.

I was very impressed with the condition of the wires under the dash when I pulled off the black wrapping so I think I'm going against my plan to run new wires to the fuse block at this time.

Did a lot of cleanup and rerouting.

Now I really need an answer on what the CANbus can do in the speedo.

Can you share a link where you got it from? Looks very sweet.

See if this works:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DJSAH1W

I hunted around for the most reasonable kit that balanced the variety of connectors and the price. Tried ones with and without the crimper and added the crimper to the ones without but I wanted to see good reviews on the crimper in particular. Settled on this one after checking eBay, summit, jegs, amazon, google shopping, etc. then I got the 22 ga stuff separately from crimpsupply.com

Gauge side of things ready to rock. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392478381.589766.jpg

Dash connectors up next.

These things crimp so nicely. Very impressed and I see a ton of these in my future.

My tool is a little different. It has 5 heart crimps........

My crimper is the same as BW's. I love mine and cant live without it!!!

It's close, I really like that it's got the seal crimp. I'm deeply in love with these things. :bacon:

Posted these quick from my phone from the garage earlier it tends to randomly shut down from the cold, so editing for commentary now.

So the first thing that I ended up changing my mind about this weekend was where I changed my mind earlier about using the Blue Sea power distribution/fuse block. This is tied to the second thing I changed my mind about and I am not going to pull the heater box, and now the distribution block is mounted on the front of the heater box (remember, mine is right-hand drive, so mirrored box).

That meant that I had to sort out how to feed power to the dist block. Getting clean power back into the cab was one of the things that made me keep the XJ PDC, so I decided to repurpose the radiator cooling fan relay circuit that has a monster 40A fuse and 10GA wire. After scratching my head for a while as to why I couldn't get the relay to trigger properly, I realized it was looking for a ground, not 12V and now I have it wired into my distribution block and that's powering the gauges. The only issue is that the power feed for the circuit is hot run vs. hot run/start, so that causes the gauges to cycle through the power-on sequence twice every startup. Once when you hit the run position, then they cut off when you go to start, then again when back to run.

Only acceptable option there (given my mission is to clean up the wiring and finally "do it right" is to open up the PDC and change the relay input out. May come to that, but not right now.

Wow, this is a horrible picture of the installed dist block with the first circuit for the gauges. This will get filled up more when I move into the switch plate. I CAN'T WAIT to get rid of the random inline fuses and wiring connections, especially at the battery. :headbang:

And the final result! :woot:

My tcase 4x4 switch plug was screwed when I got the Jeep and I just cut it out. Tonight I soldered on a new wire and crimped on a temporary connector that I forced onto the terminal to see if I could get the 4x4 light working. It didn't work with the shifters, but I checked it on a ground and it's fine, so either I need a better ground to the tcase or the switch is shot.

High beam works and I think the fuel gauge needs calibrated because I'm pretty sure I filled it when I dropped in the Stabil before it got parked for the winter.

I have the oddball in-dash warning light for the ebrake which has always worked, but when I took out the stock speedo, there was wiring and lamp for the ebrake warning light, but it had never worked. Checked and that ground isn't connected to the ebrake switch, so I cut/spliced/soldered a jumper into the dash light and got the in-speedo ebrake light working as well.

In the end, I wired the multi-gauge inverter for the face illumination to the feed from the stock dimmer so that the faces dim with the stock dimmer, then I can tweak the brightness with the Speedhut dimmer on the inverter. Works out perfectly and looks like I'll be setting the faces just short of full-on.

I was worried about how visible the white needles would be on the faces at night, but they're awesome and now I'm SO glad I talked myself into it even though I was concerned about them.

Next up: drilling holes for tach and clock along with the 12V and USB plugs. Can't wait for my pressure and trans temp gauges to come in! :smokin:
