TH400 or TF999 with a 4.0

I found a guy with a recently rebuilt TF999 out of a CJ. He said the early models dont use an ECM and are all hydraulic? Does anyone know about the bolt and spline count/length & compatability with these? For what it's worth, my 4.0L is out of a 94XJ.
All Torque Flight a999 are hydraulic. Some have a lockup torque converter some have a non-lockup torque converter. It is not until you get into the a500 with an overdrive that computers were introduced.

a904 - 2.45 1st gear
a998 - 2.74 1st gear
a999 - 2.74 1st gear
TF-6
30RH is the new name for the a998
32RH is the new name for the a999

30 / 32 = torque capabilities
R = rear wheel drive
H = hydraulic

All are the same transmission. TF-6 is the general class. a904 has 3 frictions, a998 has 4 frictions, a999 has 5 frictions.

a500 is a 4 speed a999 with an overdrive unit in the tailhousing.

Then there is the TF-8 or a727, but that was not put behind an I-6 engine.

Jeep called their Transmissions Load Flites, Chrysler called them Torque Flites.

I still suggest the AW4 over the a999.

Get the numbers off the pan rail on the driver’s side. Post the numbers and I can decode them and tell you exactly what the transmission is. Also, get a picture of the input shaft. That will tell you if it is lockup or non-lockup.

As the owner of 3 a999 transmissions, I still vote for the AW4.

New torque converter for the a999 is $250 plus core charge (if you can find one, good luck). You can buy a new torque converter for an AW4 on rockauto for $140 plus core and they are always in stock. Hard parts are the same. Sure you can get clutches and steels for an a999, but if you need new sun gears or a new pump, impossible to find.

If you want to learn more about the a999, look through my rebuild thread. https://www.cj-8.com/threads/torqueflite-999-rebuild.52594/

Input splines on a transmission need to match the torque converter. The flex plate needs to match the balance of the engine and the bolt pattern of the torque converter. The a999, AW4, T-5 all use a 23 spline output shaft that matches the D-300 and NP-231 transfer cases. (Double check that as some early NP-231 used 21 spline). The a999 is most definitely 23 spline.

Do yourself a favor and get an AW4.

I vote for keeping the T5 in your 8 and buying a Prius to scratch the automatic itch. That way you get the best of both worlds with no need to castrate a Jeep. 😜
Exsqueez me 🤔
To each their own I guess 😉
