The Case of the Curious Bumper

2 weeks ago I saw a Scrambler for sale a couple hours away. The ad mentioned that the owner had the the original bumpers (not attached at the time). I connected with him and asked if he would sell me the original rear bumpers, after a few days of back and forth he agreed. When I asked for a picture of it was a bit surprised at what I saw. Similar to a OEM scrambler bumper (step up, extended end caps) but it has a raised lip as it meets the body, so obviously not stock. I bought it and the front bumper (with mounted Marchal 850 GTs and a new brake booster from Collins (Still in box) for $350.

Once I picked it up I then reached out to Jeremy Tepper on facebook and asked if had seen it before, he shared this diagram. The bumper is very similar except is has hole to mount a license plate and holes for plate lights.

Looks like the bumper I bought for my Toyota Hilux in the 80s.

I found some other posts here that talk about a similar looking bumper except it doesn't have the end caps like mine. I posted a question to the CJ Restoration FB page and sparked a really interesting conversation between John Hollibaugh and Dan Drimmie

Took it to the local ag store to get blasted and powder coated ($125). For some reason the didn't take the ball off (oh well). now its mounted up.

I plasti dipped the end caps for a more authentic look. I'll end up painting them down the road if I decide to keep the 2 tone look.

It may be a J truck bumper, Jersey would know for sure.

I like the colors, torn between removing the ball and putting a chrome one on or leaving alone. Make sure if you take it off you take a razor knife and cut it clean around the ball. Don't want to remove the ball and chip/pull the powder coating.

Agreed. This is either a 76-78ish CJ-5/7 bumper or maybe a sportside J-truck bumper. The lip and light holes are definitely J-truck style. The townside J bumpers are longer than CJ bumpers but not sure about sportside.
