Hoping you guys can help me with a little 'gentleman's disagreement'.

A buddy of mine is buying an early 70s CJ5 that has about 4 inches of lift. The tires are pretty shot and will need to be replaced ASAP.

I told him the 31s would look fine but he seems to think that would look strange given the lift. I suppose we can just go to the store and look, but I am curious if anyone here has any thoughts. Would 31s look ok under 4 inches of lift or would he need 33/35s?

Any thoughts are welcomed. Thanks.

I have 31s on 4.5" of lift. You tell me, does it look weird?

I don't mind that. I have a 4" with 33's. I'm starting to get used to it but I thought they looked silly at first. Coming from a Silverado I figured 33's would look small but on a Jeep they look pretty beefy. I would probably go right in the middle next time with 32's.

I am now running 31's with a 2" lift. Before the 31's I had 33's with the 2" lift and they relly filled up the fenders. Drives a lot better with the 31's.

MHO is for what the owner WANTS. 31s are fine with no/minimal lift (likely body pucks). With a more significant lift 33/35 look more appropriate.

It's all about use and the owner's eye. I've got 0 lift and went from 31s to 325s for appearance, usage, and ride feel. For me, beefy stock and road tread worked better as my only offroad time is sand on the beach. And "Street" tread is so much quieter/smoother for most of my use...DD enjoyment of a classic old-school SUV.

YMMV

I've got 31's on my '79 CJ-5 with a 4" lift. Sorry, I don't have a pic. It looks ok I guess, I got a real deal on the wheels and tires so that was a factor. ( 5 Mickeythompson wheels and mickey tires at 50% tread for $500) Really they would look better if the wheels had better backspacing to make them look wider. I'll be buying 33's next go around.
