Hey ya'll, I'm new here and thought I would say hello. Even though I am new here, I am not a novice builder, I have redone a couple of CJ7's in the past, built between 8 &10 stock cars and drag cars, two custom motorcycles (including frames) and a hotrod lawn mower. I worked in the movie industry for a while building and working on picture cars and now I am back to doing my own restorations. The Scrambler has always been my favorite and I finally have purchased on of my own. It's an 81 258, with an automatic that is under 100k mileage wise. It's a totally unmolested vehicle that still has all 5 original wheels and even the original jack and lug wrench. It does have it's issues, typical Jeep rust but not really a biggie for me to fix. The thing is so original I have decided not to butcher it with a lift and 35's but to do as accurate an original restoration as I can. I have been lurking here, reading up and it seems as though there is a wealth of knowlegdeable people here and great information. Now al of that to ask this, Since I have never done an accurate restoration on a jeep I never really cared about decoding the VIN on the ones I had. I have found a few sites that give me basic info, when it was made, serial number engine and trans. Is there a trim tag on these that will tell me paint codes, interior codes, decal types, that sort of stuff. Also should there be tags on the diffs that give me gear ratios. I'm fairly confident mine are originals but I would like to know exactly what they are. I'll thank ya'll in advance for the help.

That should say “decode” the VIN. Sorry, I tried to edit but it didn’t work.

Did you ask for a price? Looks nice. 147 pictures on the dealer website but none of the frame or underneath. Overlander too and troop seats but not RHD, no export mirrors or lights🤔
 
No, I have not contacted the dealer. They previously had it listed on eBay classifieds with a price tag of $45k. Now it’s on eBay auction style, with I’m sure, a high reserve set. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas on its history based off the VIN.

Welcome to the site, lot of good information and people here that can help along the way. Make sure you use build section to share your progress and photos. There is a tag on driver firewall under master cylinder that can be decoded with this link http://www.82jambo.com/documents/Paint and Trim Codes/1981-1986 Trim Codes.pdf
 
First let me start with that is a very cool vehicle.

While it does have the world cab which makes it really cool, it is not an Overlander. The Overlander was a version only sold in Australia. As such they are all right hand drive and have an additional data plate on the firewall on the driver’s side.

I believe this one is a Llareno II from Venezuela. These were much more common there than the overlander in Australia. They were also left hand drive and equipped with troop seating. They were also made to the end of the YJ era as the YJ-L which was a CJ-8 body and YJ front clip.

From the photos, I don’t think $45k is off the mark for where this level of Overlanders have been trading hands recently. I am assuming all sheet metal is solid and it is mechanically sound.

That’s great info! Thanks. In that Llareno II image you posted, it looks like that is a shorter wheelbase (like a CJ7) as compared to the yellow one that is for sale. I guess they made them in both the CJ7 and CJ8 wheelbases? I was comparing the distance from the door to the rear wheel and the length of the rear side windows in both photos.
 
Yes, they made the world cab in -7 and -8 lengths. I think the biggest market for the -7 version was England. They were also in South America, but from the used listings I have seen the -8 was more prevalent there.

The original Llareno was pre ‘82 and the hard top had windows in the rear corners.
