What's your Career?

Soldier for just over 17 years, currently serving as an instructor to students of all services on operational level air-ground integration and command and control at Hurlburt Field FL... background is fire support (field artillery)... and trying to figure out what in the world I'm going to do next. I keep telling my wife she's got three years to figure out how to support me when I retire.

I have sold fertilizer and chemicals since 89 as my main job and still enjoy doing it today. I am a citrus grower ( Indian River Grapefruit ) and a cattle rancher (partners with my father) here in sunny Florida and have had a jeep fettish since my first one a 47 willys before I ever had a drivers license. We used to build swamp buggies before all the mud fest got popular and everyone bought one. We found that building our buggies out of wagoneers (something my father did in 1974 out of a rolled over 74 wagoneer) gave us the smoothest ride over rough pastures and palmettos. We still have the first one he built and we have a collection of wagoneers for parts because they are getting hard to find cheap!

Since Nov '87 have been in the retail store fixture/millwork manufacturing business. Have been everything from the shipping supervisor to production/plant manager. Currently am a Project Manager which includes cost estimates and fixing all the other issues that the other departments don't take care of.... :banghead:

Fed. Work for one of the 3-letter agencies. In the past I have worked construction and farming, dished frozen yogurt while in college, and had any number of low pay/high effort jobs. I have thrown, stacked, and stored more hay bales than I care to remember. I'm still pretty decent with dozers, loaders, and backhoes, as my buddy's father still has a construction company.

After grad school, I was a US Probation Officer in New York City. Great job, but no where near as good as being an agent. While there are politics and BS, I can't imagine a better job. They give me great training, excellent equipment, and my agency at least "gets it," and I put bad guys in jail. Going on 10 years with them, 14 years total sucking on Uncle Sam's teat.

Also, about 3 years ago I became one of not so many SWAT Hostage/Crisis Negotiators. It's a lot of extra work, and time away from home (and $0 extra pay), but so far, it's very rewarding.

Great thread, I just read everybody's posts, good stuff.

I'm a financial advisor.

Well as the name suggests I'm a Professional Fire Fighter/EMT in a small town. My grandfather, a great uncle and two uncles all on my dads side were firemen, so as the last male in the family i did not have much of a choice. Got married and started on th F.D. all in the same month. After 12 years i still love them both. Maybe not everyday:) but all in all I would not want to change anything. I do a little farming and some construction on my days off if I'm not chasing my 2 year old. One of my uncles has a 78 CJ7 he bought brand new, so i grew up riding in it going hunting and fishing. I got an 84 CJ7 about 9 years ago and had a Comanche for some years, but always wanted an 8. So here I am 36 years old with a great wife, two beautiful girls and a job I really love. The scrambler is the icing on my cake.

I worked in a restaurant for 14 years, started as a dishwasher at 14 then was running it when it closed when I was 28. Woked at a u-pull-it-yard for 3 months, didn't like that I had to "flat out lie to peoples faces" about where there city towed cars where. Been cutting down/trimming trees for 8 years now. Not sure if I could really do a "desk job", would probably drive me crazy.

Graduated from Drexel University in 1995 with an Accounting Bachelors Degree... Worked for small to mid size corporations since in various accounting positions... Currently working for a petroleum pipeline logistics carrier...

Like Bushmaster I have been involved with the military since 1993. I currently serve in a unit that figures out how to defeat enemy radar and surface to air projectiles, then relays that information to our deployed operations units for the Air Force. We stay very busy.

Rode the beast on-base today, shaking my fist at the storm clouds.

Bump to the top...

Bump for those who did not have the chance to contribute to a great thread.

I was a equipment mech for 8 years, working for a couple of nationwide rental firms amongst a few other places. Then about 6 years ago I decided it was time to follow my calling and became a Deputy Sheriff. I went to work for a medium sized Sheriff's Office staring out working in the jail and progressed to the street. Now along with my regular duty as a deputy, I am also a firearms instructor.

After USAF active duty, B.A. degree from Ole Miss, worked with wife in public education for 35 years after getting M.A. together. Bought first Jeep, '83 CJ-7 from original owner in '93. Wife saw CJ-8 in town, thought it was 'cute.' After severely chastising her for that faux pas, found an '81 CJ-8. Now have both, worse money pits than a boat. Retired from education, now buy Jeep parts, medical services. Fully understand that Jeep stands for 'Just empty every pocket!' Sure enjoy drivin' 'em, though.

I grew up working in the family plumbing business and knew I wanted something else. I went to Lamar taking Mechanical Drafting got out in 1972. While I was in College I worked for Bethlehelm Shipyard. I then went to work for Gulf States Utilities and spent 25 years with them before taking an early retirement 4 years after the merger with Entergy. Somewhere in there I acquired my Coast Guard OUPV License. I then went to work for Texas A&M University with the Engineering Extension Service, Electric Power Training Division for 6 years before I resigned (I was tired of the travel) Along with teaching General Safety I also taught OSHA and Crane Operator courses. I then went on to be the Safety Director for two different Electrical Contractors. After working to restore power in the South East Texas area after Hurricane Rita it took from September to January. I decided it was time to move on again. I am currently self employed doing Electrical Inspections on components for the offshore drilling industry (Currently componets for the Chevron Nemba Project Angola South Africa ) if I am not doing that I am on the water Guiding for Trout Redfish Flounder and whatever is biting.

Gee where do i start? lets go backwards!

Currently I work for Ford Motor Co. in Product Design, in Dearborn, Michigan. I have been here 21 years, 9 months, 20 days, 6 hours and some 20 minuts now. But who's counting
What I do is Jump thru hoops, Problem solve and mix in some drafting along the way. Oh, and ALOT of this: :banghead:

Basically, when I am allowed, I invent cars and the parts to build them (along side some other very talented/frustrated individuals), do the CAD design work, and then release them for manufacture. Then, ultimately you buy and drive them. (I hope)

Very stressfull job, it was alot more fun befor CAD showed up, really. :(

Befor this i did a variety of jobs, mostly in the construction field (rough and trim carpenter) a stint as a mechanic (auto and motorcycle), short order cook, Clerk, owned a lawn scaping company, and worked in the custom cabnet industry building and instaling custom cabnets.
I still work free lance in the construction industry doing small remodel jobs and such that the larger remodeling contracters wont do, plenty of work out there if your willing.

Thats the quick version....I have left outa few of the more 'colorfull' jobs I have done becouse they were construction related.

Civil Engineer

Went to college at MTU (upper peninsula of michigan) from 1990 to 1995 and moved back to NJ. Worked for a geotechnical engineering company for 3 years then left to go work with my wife at a civil engineering company. Started there as a civil designer, passed my PE test and in 8 years was managing the company's satellite office in northern NJ. Left there in 2005 to work for a national residential home developer doing land development/management of approvals and consultants. In 2007, market caught up with them and position terminated in Aug 2007. Found a new gig managing a civil engineering division :banghead:at a multi-discipline engineering company and been enjoying the past 3 years there.

Dream job is to retire and sort/hide the really good 2x4 lumber at Home Depot to keep for myself....somewhere in NH or TN would be fine.......
