Wiring up the Solenoid on a Carter BBD with Melted Harness

Hi Gang,

I'm to the next problem on the Scrambler I'm rebuilding... I have fuel to the carburetor but the stock BBD needs to have its solenoid rewired because the connector was melted and disconnected when I purchased the Scrambler.

The pictures below will help you understand my dilemma and please understand that I know I need to replace this carburetor with an MC2100 but right now all I want to do is see if this stock setup will run before I throw money at a new carb.

So... here's my dilemma:

The wires to the solenoid look like this:

The melted connector looks like this:

and the wiring that goes to my wiring harness looks like this:

I have 4 wires to hook up to 5 terminals and it appears that the terminal sizes are different. Honestly, for all I know that melted connector didn't even go to the carburetor or the carburetor I have isn't for a 1982 Scrambler...

Can someone in the know enlighten me? Ideally, I just need someone to look at the connector on their BBD and tell me what color wire goes to what terminal.

If you use the picture of the solenoid I posted in this thread... oriented just as I have it; the terminals would be:

1 2
3 4 5

Yet another pain in the butt question; but my factory manual doesn't show which wire goes where... it just shows wires going to the solenoid on the carburetor but not to which pin.

One final question... should the carburetor run without any of the wires connected? I would think it should from looking at the diagram of the carburetor but perhaps there is something I'm missing.

Thanks in advance!

Joe

Here's what it looks like on the carb I removed from an '83.

top, left to right: brown/black tracer, purple,
bottom left to right: orange/black tracer, red, black/white tracer.

Adam... thanks so much! That is exactly what I needed. Now to find the connector and get it all wired back up. This is the last thing I need before I start up the Scrambler for the first time... the anticipation is like Christmas (mixed with a little dread for what I'm going to find once it starts... things like leaky rear main seal and bad throw-out bearing and ....)

LOL.

Thanks again Adam!!!

I might have a connector that would work. Let me check tomorrow. Though I personally would just disable it and just adjust the mixture screw underthe caps.

Doesn't the Nutter bypass mod. eliminate that solenoid? And/or the computer, etc., etc.

Hi Randy,

Since I can't seem to find the correct connector (the one I showed melted in the pictures above is a relay of some sort that melted the connector... I still need to figure out what relay it is) AND I can't find the computer anywhere (anyone know where it is located???) The previous owner may have already installed the bypass. I need to do some research on it.

Joe

The computer would be inside the jeep above the heater box.
If that connector was for a relay, it might be the one usually near the firewall, basically coming out of the wire harness, that I believe is for a manifold heater. Not needed for engine to run.

I looked up the color of the wires and you are correct, it is the manifold heater relay which was melted.

My computer, and the connector for the solenoid are completely gone as are all the wires. I'm betting the previous owner must have made the bypass.

Thanks for all the help. I'm rebuilding the carburetor now (it is soaking in carb solvent) and I'll have the rebuild kit on Monday so I can rebuild the carb...

If all is well; I should have a running Scrambler by next weekend!

Thanks again!

Joe

kinda funny....

he he that's kinda funny....

If the rebuild doesn't work out like you plan you might want to consider going to a GM HEI/MC2100 conversion. It will eliminate most if not all of your charred wiring. After looking at your pics, I'm just afraid your gonna be haunted by electrical gremlins for ever...Just something to think about. If nothing else, you might start looking for another wiring harness for the engine compartment....

I wouldn't put any time into this, chances are good the solenoid won't work anyway. I think for the Nutter you have to have the solenoid hooked up and play with the wiring, so that's not a solution.

I'd leave it alone until you get the 2100 on it and I'd do whatever you can to make that happen ASAP.

You might try ebay for a used engine harness to get the connector. I have seen them from time to time, cheap. Since you are missing the ECU this might make it less cost effective than just replacing the carb with another type in the long run. For what it is worth, I know I am in a minority but I am happy with my Carter carb. I rebuilt it and put everything back OEM (pulsed-air system and all) and it works great. I do know from reading that it is not the best carb out there but if you are trying to minimize alterations to your Jeep it can be done and still run plenty good for normal use.

Sincerely,
