Aside from the wheelbase, there is nothing between an 8 and an Unlimited that you can compare. As far as daily driving, the Unlimited is miles ahead of the Scrambler, which should be expected considering the designs are more than 20 years apart. In stock trim, the Unlimited is more comfortable, rides and handles better, and is more powerful. Of course, very few Scramblers are still stock, but you get the point.
However, no matter what you do to a Wrangler, it will never have the "cool" factor that you get with the CJ. If you like talking to strangers, a Scrambler will draw them in every time you leave the garage. :)

Scrambler vs Wrangler Unlimited

Everything that was said about the Scrambler vs The Unlimited is correct. However I do turn heads with my Unlimited as much as I did with the Scrambler. Cool factor, depends on how you equip the jeep, both are cool. The Scrambler is a collectors item and they are getting harder to find and more exspensive to buy. just my 2 cents worth.:D Dave

Thanks for the infomation guys.
Still haven't bought a jeep yet but still looking.

I have heard on the thread that one person spoted a half hard top on a Jeep Unlimited at "CAMP JEEP" and it was a proto type from Best Tops. This might be an option to get the cj8 look with a little newer jeep. (The Unlimited)

Not to offend the Scrambler guys, They already have what we all would like to have.

What's the old saying?

TO COPY IS THE BEST FORM OF FLATTERY!

still a want to be.

Nah, I wouldnt even call it a scrambler. Its a knock off of a CJ6 more than a scrambler. Rear overhang minimized vs the Scrambler with a huge hangover.

But then again most people forget about the old CJ6's

Is it a CJ-8 or CJ-6

Sorry to pop everyones bubble but it is niether. It is an Unlimited. I love my Scrambler while I had it but the Unlimited resembles the Scrambler much more than the CJ-6 if we had to compare. Bottom Line is that this Jeep is the Wrangler Unlimited besides the perfomance difference it resembles the 8 more, ie doors, width, possibly the length resembles the CJ-6.:D Dave

I took a new Unlimited for a test drive and what really surprised me was how gutless it seemed. I step on the gas on the freeway to pass someone and..... well, not much would happen. I don't know exactly what it was about that Unlimited, but all the 4.0 Cherokees I've driven seemed to have a lot more pep. The Unlimited did have 31's on aftermarket wheels, but that shouldn't have made such a huge difference.

Not that it's the reason we should buy Jeeps in the first place, but I just don't see the Unlimited getting all that much attention. To most people it isn't all that noticably different than a regular old Wrangler, whereas the Scrambler is quite noticably different than a CJ-7.

I think the Unlimited would make a better daily driver off the lot, however. But I wouldn't ever give up my Scrambler for one.

Ok, it happened to me today. I was sittin' at a red light, on a reasonably busy intersection mind you, and a 18 wheeler comes from my left, and pulls a righthand turn onto the street I am on. Comes to a complete halt mid turn, (truck is 90 degrees to his trailer at this point), rolls down his window with a big grin and yells "Hey, I just ordered one just like yours, I cant wait to get it!" I just smiled and said congratulations, you'll love it, I figured I wouldn't discuss his oversight and risk someone getting killed at the intersection. It gave me a chuckle and a grin for the next few miles.

Gutless

The fact of the matter is when the Scrambler was first produced they did not get much attention either, Now I know that the Scrambler Community are very proud of their Scramblers, as they should be, but the Unlimited has quite a few things different than a standard "OLD" Wrangler. That would be like calling the Scrambler not much different than an Old CJ. As far as the responce with the Unlimited vs. The Cherokee, Different Gearing. Dave :)

I just don't see how the Unlimited is as different from a regular Wrangler as the Scrambler is from a CJ-7. With it's far greater length, half cab on, and it's pickup like appearance, the Scrambler was a very noticable departure. The overall length of the Scrambler is 15% greater than CJ-7 while the Unlimited is only 7% longer than an Unlimited. Makes for quite a greater visual impression. The difference between and Unlimited and a regular Wrangler is more akin to the difference between a GMC Yukon and a Yukon XL. Same basic shape, but with a few extra inches that's really not all that much to get excited about. Plus look at how the Scrambler came to be. Jeep was trying to do something new and somewhat innovative, if unappreciated at the time, with the CJ by turning it into a small truck whereas the Unlimited is nothing more than a part of the current retro fad and trying to ride on the Scrambler's coat tails. Always seems like repro's are never really able to match the spirit of the originals.

As far as the gearing, I see Jeep's website lists 3.73s as being the only axle gears available for the Unlimited. My nephew's 93 Cherokee is a typical Cherokee and it has 3.54 gears with 30x9.50 BFG ATs and that thing will smoke the tires all day long and has passing power to boot. So I don't see how the Unlimited should perform much differently, and yet it did. Maybe it's more of a difference between how the AW4 automatic transmission in the Cherokees and the new 42RLE automatic transmission used in new Wranglers transmit power. But whatever it was, I was left quite unimpressed with the Unlimited's lackluster power.

The other thing that REALLY surprised me was how the Unlimited didn't really ride much better than my stock 22 year old CJ-8. I was expecting a noticable improvement due to the coil spring suspension, but it just wasn't there. Maybe when lifted is where the coil springs really come into play.

I don't dislike the Unlimited. I may even give it another look once the Rubicon packaged ones and with manual transmissions start showing up. I just might have had too high of expectations for it. But for $25k+, I do expect a lot. They are not bad Jeeps at all, but they are definitely no Scrambler.

That's about the only type of question about my Scrambler that I've ever gotten. I thought it was pretty odd.

As far as the Unlimited goes, I think only the non-Jeep owning observer would let the extra length of body behind the door lead them to compare the two. Without noting the obvious general engineering differences between the TJ and the CJ, I'd have to say I agree with the comment that the Unlimited was designed as a SWB Jeep with extra passenger room. The Scrambler, on the other hand, was designed to emphasize a pick up truck style cargo bed. A hybrid. One's an SUV and one is a pickup truck...no comparison.

We really do need to come up with a bumper sticker solution.

How about:

---------------It's old, paid for and made by AMC---------------
It's not a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

;)

I was at the local Ford dealership talking to a tech friend of mine. One of the service writers saw my Scrambler and said to his customer that it was the new Rubicon version of the Unlimited and that Chrysler is going "retro" more than ever these days! We got a big grin.
