New World Cabs?

Today I've got some real parts to show you, fresh out of the molds this morning. Here's the first side panel and one of the door surrounds. They're obviously not trimmed yet, and they're just clamped together for the photo, but they turned out just fine.

And here's a shot of the inside:

I'll bet you could use that suround to make a filler piece for Postal top owners to use regular doors! Hint hint hint.....

Actually this one is for the TJ, the shape of the top of the TJ and CJ/YJ doors is different. I made the door surround mold in two pieces so I could replace the upper part of the jamb to exactly match both the CJ/YJ door and TJ door shapes.

In the photo below, the black one is for the TJ, the unpainted one is for the CJ/YJ. On the CJ/YJ, point "B" is the thinnest part, and there's a straight taper back to point "A". On the TJ, the thinnest part is at "D", and it gets thicker towards both "C" and "E". The two parts are less than 1/4" different, but if you want the door gaps right, you need two different parts.

So no, I wouldn't use the part I just made to make door fillers for World Cabs, I'd want to use the CJ/YJ one pictured below to get the door gap perfect. :)

Just......Amazing!

You sir...Are astounding!
Maybe you should open up a "school of jscherb". Us less worthy initiates could come and sit at your feet and learn. You could have a TJ class for those liking worldcabs fitting that model. And then a CJ/YJ/Scrambler class....We could all invade and watch and learn and at the end of school, as our graduation certificate, we could leave with our own hand crafted, jscherb supervised and approved top!!!

Oh puhleezzzz, I'm not worthy!!

I taught myself all of this fiberglass stuff over the past year by reading books and studying every source I could find. I tried a small project first (the Retro Wrangler rear fenders), and that gave me confidence to do this big project. Anyone who wants to do this themselves probably can, although I may have more woodworking experience than the average guy so I have an advantage for making the masters, but I'm new to fiberglass. Fiberglass isn't rocket science, it is something anyone can learn.

But hey if anyone wants to drop by, I'll be happy to put them to work doing fiberglass (so they can learn) :).

Well put me down for a set to run regular CJ8 doors. I'd like to find something to work with some type of upper hard or soft doors too as I'd like to use YJ 1/2 doors in the summer.

Sorry, no plans to make fillers for Postal Tops/World Cabs - I've got too many of my own projects to work on as it is.

Yeah. We could call it JSU. J Scherb University. I like the sound of that. I think the engineers at Jeep should take a class from Jeff and pay him royalties for coming up with this wonderful stuff. Although, he might have to start fabricating Fiat tops as well.

Years ago I owned a Fiat 850 Spider, that was a fun car. 49 cubic inches, 6 gallon gas tank (this was when gas was 45 cents a gallon!). Filler 'up please, here's my $2.50. It was a convertible... yes, if I had it today I'd have to make a hard top for it :)

I popped the rear corner modules out of the molds today, so here are some more photos of clamped-together parts. (Please don't mind the module gap lines or the untrimmed edges in this rough state :)).

First, a short (Scrambler-sized) half-cab:

And some more shots of the LJ full cab with a rear corner:

Today I'm molding the other side window panel and the rear door inner and outer, which will complete everything except the roof.

Lookin good...

I love the "removable windows!" Though it seems the tint is a little dark? Heehee.... So, since your performing the dangling carrot routine...Are these part of what will go to the unknown manufacturer to decide what goes into production? Or is it just you enjoying yourself and playing around? Looks fantastic either way!

My plan would be to deliver the wooden masters to the company. That would include the roof, door surrounds (with both TJ and CJ/YJ inserts), rear corners, side window panels and rear door inner and outer.

From this collection of master parts, the company would make their own molds. They would also have to make a bunch of decisions, since these masters can be used to make many different molds:

- Which models of Jeep to offer products for? CJ-7/YJ, CJ-8, TJ, LJ?

- Full or half cabs? Which length half cabs? Extended half cabs or stock Scrambler length or something else?

- Degree of modularity to provide. Mold the side panels as one piece (surrounds/window panel/rear corners all in one?) or as separate modules.

- "Special versions"? I haven't posted all of these here, but I've designed a way to use the roof panel as a hard bikini; I've also designed a version with hard sides but removable canvas and/or glass windows.

etc.... lots of options and decisions for them to make...

Astounding...as usual.

I would really not like to be the folks to have to make those decisions! Kinda stinks that if they (and this is how I bet it happens) go the modern TJ route...they will (?) still be buying all the masters from you right? I'm sure they wouldn't wish the CJ versions to go to a competing manufacturer. And if they won't make them, but keep the molds...kinda gives us "old relic" Jeepers the poke in the eye.
Sure, I understand that from a buiseness point of view it is logical. Not appling fault since they MUST make money to stay around too! But alas...what are we to do...:(

Yes, all of the masters for all of the versions would go to only one company. You can bet the first tops they would release would be for TJ/LJ Jeeps, that's where the biggest market is and the most money. What they would decide to do about earlier models I couldn't say.

At this point, I do plan to do a CJ/YJ half cab for my Gaucho pickup, so at least one will be made for an earlier model... :)

The Klingons...

Well,
I hope your up for it then since there will be a small herd of us living vicariously through you...
