I know this is very early but I would like some information so we can make some reservations. Will there be a meeting place each morning and if so where will that be? Of the hotels listed or not which one would be decent in price and quality? Any other helpful information would be appreciated. Looking forward to the fun times.

Thanks Tim

We will have a meeting place each morning to line up for the trails. Committeeman Bill Espinosa lives in Ouray and has a couple of places picked out on the edge of town that we can use. Plans are still in progress and will be posted. As for price you can click on the links given in the above post. You can also do review search for comments from people who have stayed there.
Bill, can you tell us how far most of the motel/hotels will be from our proposed morning meeting site? Ouray is a small town.

Thank You gentlemen for your help so far. I will hold off for further info but it does sound like as far as location it wouldn't make much of a difference. So looking forward to experiencing new trails.

Tim

A huge Thanks to you guys for posting all of the information!!

This will be a 2-3 week trip for me, I plan on going to Moab befor this event.
(looking for others to accompany me)

Gotta get the scrambler put together :banghead:

Moab is a very wonderful place to go 4 wheelin. We have been going every year for the last 4-5 years in May and next year will not be an exception. Last July I made a quick trip back to help a friend bring back a Jeep he bought out there and it was a lot hotter than it was in May. I had not seen the campgrounds and hotels so empty. The trip to Colorado for the Colorado and National Scrambles will be a 2 week trip for us as well. There should be some time to do some other sightseeing as well. With the first snow storm of the season that just came through today, I'm so looking forward to these events.

Won't be able to do 3 weeks for sure, but want to do the CO and National events. We can talk more :)

I'm planning on doing both but I may be scramblerless:shrug::(. Putting out feelers for an open seat at both.

Don

Don,

I'm planning on attending both these events for the first time ever.:D (Actually get some real "use" out of my 8!). This far out, I'm unsure if I'll have anyone else along (grandson most likely) just yet. You're more than welcome to a seat if I have no one else aboard. I don't even know yet if I'll be driving my junk out & back or possibly towing it with a dolly, but either way, if I have an open seat, you're welcome.

Sounds like one more for the Ohio Valley Caravan!:woot:

Sounds like one more for the Ohio Valley Caravan!

Kevin-------Didn't know there was a caravan forming!:rotfl:
Sounds like a good idea though! If I drive my 8 out, I'm afraid I won't
keep up with the others too well! My alternate plan right now is a
tow dolly behind our Chevy van. That way, if something should break
while on the road or "out there", I'd be able to drag it home!
Sign me up for the OVC. :woot:

On the tow dolly thing, think that through really well and think about other options. I don't know how your van is outfitted, but I saw a club member back in NC end up in a very nasty accident due to his XJ being on a dolly behind his VERY nice Grand Wagoneer when he was forced to do an emergecy maneuver due to the fault of another driver.

There's a whole thread on it somewhere on www.nc4x4.com.

The guy had towed with that setup many many times to go wheeling and had been actively talking about how well it worked for him up until that happened. Afterwards, he was saying that a full trailer with surge brakes probably would have made all the difference and saved a ton of damage to both vehicles.

That thread is a big part of the reason I haven't bothered trying any kind of towing setup until I got a serious vehicle with whcih to do the pulling.

When are you guys going to be heading out? (everyone, including Bigwalton)
If you dont mind, I'd like to join up with you for the trip out.
I am planning on attending both events as well as revisiting/seeing some of the other areas while I am out there..
(I'll be a newbee as well to both of these events)

As for the tow dolly thing, I feel that unless your towing a FWD or damaged vehicle, a dolly is just more wieght.
Drive it or trailer it are your best options....I'll be driving mine as of right now. (no tow vehicle)

I did flat tow my old rig (samurai) all over the country behind a 1st gen 4dr Exploder, and only had one minor incident turning a corner on a freshly rained road in Indiana on my way to the Badlands ORV park...turned the corner and the Samurai wanted to go straight...it pulled the rear of the Exploder around a bit, but no damage and I kept on going without another incident, though I was alot more carefull on wet pavement after that.

Let me know if you guys would like another tag along in your caravan west :fingerscrossed:

I am thinking that I might well join up with these guys too, but I'll probably go down to Cincinnati to work out of our office there for a couple days prior to taking off. Don't know if you'd be up for being down there a couple extra days before leaving, but we could caravan that part together too possibly.

Given that my tow rig is a Ford, you'd be a perfect guy to have along!! ;) :rotfl:

Big Walton,-

I appreciate your concern by bringing this up as I have never used a tow dolly before. Looked for the thread you mentioned but never found it after about 20 pages of searching. My van is set-up to pull a bass boat(approx. 3200lbs.) The hitch is rated for 5000/500lbs, but being a 1/2 ton vehicle, I don't think the suspension is really adequate at that rated weight. A serious tow vehicle would be wonderful but it's just not feasible in the foreseeable future. :banghead: The dollys weigh-in at around 600lbs. vs. 1200-1500lbs. for a 16ft car hauler type trailer. I'm not sure what my 8 weighs but I figure that combo to be at or over the hitch rating, so.........that's where the idea of the dolly comes in. Of course, any dolly I would buy would have to have brakes but I hear your concern too! This tow idea is still in the formative stage, so maybe others on here can provide somemore ideas/input. The "adventure factor" of driving out there and back is very strong, honestly, I'd love to do just that, (I drove it home from Denver when purchased) but the worry of breaking something big and expensive 1200-1500 miles from home has me a bit apprehensive. I guess there's plenty of time for me to sort this out, but planning for "the trip" is half the fun! :D

http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1527&highlight=dolly+waggy+wreck

dolly waggy wreck got it as the 4th hit  Looks like all the photos broke, but it was just a bunch of mangled mess, the descriptions he uses are good enough.

And I forgot, it was a buddy of his that had used it a bunch (the guy with BUG), not him, that was always saying how nice a setup it was (and that was towing it with a ZJ!)

Going to Cinci is no big deal, I have friends in Louisville I can vist a few days. Or I could just meet up with everyone in Indiana, We'll see how it all works out in a few more months when its closer.
Sure, having me along would be helpfull, I should be able to get you a 10% discount on parts at the Ford dealer. :rotfl: :woot:
Seriously, I wouldnt worry about your Tow Van too much, That V10 is a prety tough engine. When the trip gets closer (and the weather better), I'll help you go over the whole thing if you would like the help, just let me know.

I generally go on trips like this packing for Bear, I bring enough tools to do most any repairs you will come across. I'm not worried about breaking down.
That is one HUGE advantage to knowing exactly what is in your Jeep and how its put together. ;)

OOooo....I can hardly wait to get back out west!!

I'm not sure about a half ton vehicle pulling thorugh the mountains. Last years Nationals in TN was a bear for me. Several of us went to Black Mnt. in Harlan Ky before the nationals to run for a few days. The trip from Ky to Tn was hilly and curvy. My truck was a 2000 chevy 1/2 ton with a 5.3 motor, and it was worked to death, it tried to over heat which it had never done before, and trans would shift up and down like crazy. I had used this setup before , going to Windrock,Tn, Clayton Ok., and Hot springs Ar. with no problems but up and down mountains is a bit much for a 1/2 ton vehicle with a small gas motor. A 3/4 ton or larger with a large gas or diesel motor is the best way to go.
My 2 cents.

Don, I both appreciate and agree with your thoughts on this and that got me to thinking about alternatives. I have an aunt & uncle that live in Loveland Co. that I would probably be stopping to see on the way out there anyway, ..........so what if I unloaded there and drove my 8 to both Idaho Springs and then to Ouray. That would keep me from hauling the 8 thru the mountains and let me drive the mostly boring part of the trip in my van. Hmmmm, this plan is starting to come together! Again, thanks for the input and the open seat offer is still open!:D
