2011 SOA National Scramble - Ouray, Colorado

Don, I both appreciate and agree with your thoughts on this and that got me to thinking about alternatives. I have an aunt & uncle that live in Loveland Co. that I would probably be stopping to see on the way out there anyway, ..........so what if I unloaded there and drove my 8 to both Idaho Springs and then to Ouray. That would keep me from hauling the 8 thru the mountains and let me drive the mostly boring part of the trip in my van. Hmmmm, this plan is starting to come together! Again, thanks for the input and the open seat offer is still open!:D

That should work. If I still have me 16' trailer then you would be welcome to use it. It does have brakes on it, but you'd have to install a controler in your van if you don't already have one. Give me a call when you get a chance. 502 321 9143.

Sam dragged his Scrambler on a pretty heavy 18'-20' trailer to Tenn. from Cincy last June with his '02 Grand Cherokee Overland with the 4.7 HO engine. Not ideal, but it didn't blow up. Of course, that was through those little Alleghenies, not Eisenhauer Pass.

I would expect we will be heading Northwest to Indianapolis from greater metropolitan Dillsboro/Cincinnati, then West. Maybe we can all hookup in Indy for you Michiganders (BW excluded - He's an honorary Cincinnatian for now).

C'mon Bobcat. You know you wanna come.

It's a little early for concrete travel plans. I am blown away at the amount of interest and forum traffic that the 2011 National Scramble is generating. Major props to Pappy Wahoo and the nacent commitee for getting us all excited this early.

Kevin, I am planning on going , but it wiil probly be without a scrambler.
Sam pulling from Cinci to Tn is almost flat ground compaired to the mountains in Co. I've seen some really big one there. I used to hunt in northwest Co.

Hey Don,

I plan on hauling out that way too. Got a Silverado 2500hd and a 16' dovetail. Not sure which Jeep I will be taking. Trying to get one of the Scramblers. If you need a seat I will probably be on my own for this trip.

Stay tuned!

Rock-N-Roll,

How is the local PD lately on vehicle code enforcement? Getting to be like Moab?
Haven't wheeled down in your area for awhile. If I go, I'll be bringing the big Jeep which is not exactly street "friendly".

Mike

Nothing like Moab. In ouray and in montrose the cops are very flexible as long as you don't draw attention to your rig. I have never had a problem around here. Moab is getting much more strict.

Just thought I'd throw this out there for you guys to ponder / my :twocents:

Last time I towed anything over the Continental Divide (Vale to Denver), I didn't have an overheat problem as much as just a horse power problem ('93 4dr Explorer, V6 5spd, 180,000+ tired miles)
I was towing my last rig, a '87 Suzuki Samurai that wieghed in around 2200#.
It was a little slow and a bit embaressing when I got passed by semi's but I made it. (michigan to Flagstaff, to Zion to moab to michigan)
Earlier in the trip was worse towing across the desert from Flagstaff Arizona, to Zion National park in Utah, to Moab. It was early June, overheating was an understatement.
The water was boiling in the block, literally. I was running with the windows down, and the heat on going down the road.
I never did shut the engine off, I was too afraid that it would sieze, so I just pulled over and poped the hood and let it idle to cool down after every climb or to get fuel.

Anyhow, for those of you running Automatic transmisions, be sure that you drop the transmision out of Overdrive or switch it to towing mode if you have the option. Towing in Overdrive will make the transmision work much harder, and will reduce the life of the transmision considerably.
A larger auxillary trans cooler is a must, but dont bypass the cooling coils in the radiator.
The Radiator coller is actually more efficient.
Heat kiils an automatic trans fast, so only run the air conditioning if you have to. The extra heat load on the cooling system makes everything work harder.
For those of you running half ton trucks/vans....a larger radiator wll go a long way to helping things stay cool., if you can affod to swap it out, its worth it.

Last thing to do is make sure your trans oil and trans filter is clean. Old trans oil will break down quickly when under higher heat loads from towing, flushing the transmision and replacing the filter will go a long way to preventing breakdowns.

This thread is growing like a good build thread. It's great. Hats off to the two committees for coordinating these events. With the announcement this far out more people maybe able to plan on coming. Speaking of which the Visitors package arrived yesterday so now the decision of where to stay has to be made. Catherine and I are looking forward to this trip. The 8 is at the mechanics (I don't possess the talent/skills/knowledge/patience/necessary tools)having MAJOR changes done to it so I can't wait for that to be done either.

Cincyjeep, Is Sam and his family planning on going?

Don---I certainly appreciate your generous offer to use your trailer! It was great to talk with you again last nite, hope you can talk your wife into making the trip too,:fingerscrossed: it should be one to remember! Once we get a bit further along thru winter I'll try to make it down there to see you. If not before, there's always the April IOK swap meet too. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.

Tim

At this point, alas, no. Too far, too long a time. He would eat up all of his vacation time and he has to do a week with his in-laws every year.

2011 SOA National Event Gathering Site

This thread is growing like a good build thread. It's great. Hats off to the two committees for coordinating these events. With the announcement this far out more people maybe able to plan on coming.

Tim

You are welcome and here is some more great stuff:
The 2011 SOA Event Committee has established a gathering site in Ouray for the National Event. The Committee and SOA Board wants to thank Bill Espinosa (Rock-N-Roll) our man in Ouray for all the time and effort he has put into making this site happen.
Below is some info Bill has gathered for us.

soaouraysite-1.jpg

This Street Map shows the location of the SOA National Event Site. Just head west on 9th street and follow as it turns north. Stop and park when you approach a bridge. Do not drive across the bridge.

This is Ouray in Early December.

Photo is the overall area of the park where the SOA gathering site will be setup. The hot springs pool and parking lot would be to the right, (north) of this photo. If you look left-center you can see a gazebo.
Old tennis court area is at extreme left. (see photo#4)

Close up of the tennis court area. This will be the tent site.
Here we will have privacy and quiet and we can park our vehicles near this lot as well.
We can also set up gas grills here if needed.
We cannot use this area for staging vehicles in the morning to start out on the trails.
We can either use the Rotary Park or the open gravel area that is just north of this site. Both places are less than a half-mile north of the park.
Look up the area on google earth and you can get a good feel for the lay of the areas.

Electricity is available on the north and south sides of the gazebo.
Electric run to the tennis courts area would be 75'-100',

Bill has also advised that the two closest motels are River's Edge and Hot Springs Inn, (Hot Springs Inn is the newest motel in town, about 5-6 years old). Both motels are 1/4 mile or less from the SOA gathering area. 4J+1+1 RV park/Campground is directly across the river from the assembly area. There is a footbridge at the North end of 4J's property that crosses the river and comes out on the side of the restrooms you see in photo #3. Here is a map link to Ouray lodging. ( http://www.discoverourtown.com/map/CO/Ouray/Lodging-1325.html ) Zoom in and pick a marker and the lodging will high light at the left side of map. You can then link to lodging website.

Happy planning.

Wanted to throw out a huge thanks for the effort an organization by the event committee to this point, you guys are doing a fantastic job!!!

I'll be making a reservation at the 4j+1+1 (what's with that name???) campground for our camper/tow rig to keep on the cheap side. Walking into town in the evenings sounds PERFECT!!!

The Adams family and Osborne family from Kansas have joined up and are in the process of renting a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom vacation rental house in Ouray. By splitting the cost we can rent the house for about the same monies or less than a motel/hotel room would have cost. This way we will have much more room. Most of these rental provide linen, fully equipped kitchen, laundry room and decks. Most are dog friendly.

A nice lady named Beth ( rentals@ourayrealty.com ) has provided this partial list below of some available rentals located in the town of Ouray.

If you are interested in one of these you should book as soon as you can. Make sure you understand the payment and cancellation terms.
You can contact: Beth Edwards Vacation Rental Specialist Ouray Rentals, Inc. (970-325-0482 (office)

Most of the hotels and motels I looked at range from $120 to $180/night. Does not include taxes or city fees. On the rentals you can multiply nightly fee x 1.13 to get a close estimated total. Example: $125/night x 1.13 = $141.25

Ouray Realty also list several condos at the Alpenglow complex and at the River Park Town Homes.

At the Alpenglow Condos they have the following:

#3 1 bedroom, 1 bath + sleeper sofa (sleeps 4) - $140 per night

#4 2 bedrooms, 1 bath + sleeper sofa (sleeps 6) - $150 per night

#5 2 bedrooms, 1 bath + sleeper sofa (sleeps 6) - $160 per night

#6 2 bedrooms, 1 bath + sleeper sofa (sleeps 6) - $165 per night

#11 2 bedrooms, 2 baths + sleeper sofa (sleeps 7) - $200 per night

They also have the following River Park Town Homes available:

1244 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths (sleeps 4) - $200 per night

1252 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths (sleeps 6) - $200 per night

1254 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths (sleeps 6) - $200 per night

1256 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths (sleeps 4) - $200 per night

1241 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths + sleeper sofa (sleeps 8) - $230 per night

1245 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths + sleeper sofa (sleeps 8) - $230 per night

1239 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths (sleeps 9) - $250 per night

Also there are many more owner vacation rental listings @ http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/colorado/southwest#a2376

As an added note:
Trailer parking should not be a problem. Bill Espinosa our man in Ouray has advised that the City will not allow overnight parking in the area where we will set up the SOA Event Site.(We are day time parking there with special permission).
However Bill and the lady from Ouray Reality advise that there is plenty public parking room to park trailers/tow vehicles on the sides of 4th Avenue, 1st Street and 3rd Avenue, (across from Twin Peaks Best Western.

If you are in the planning stage and have questions please let us know and the Event Committee will try to answer.

Called 4J+1+1 yesterday after reading post and Jill called back today. Reservations ready for July.

We"re ready to go, but guess if wish to hard, the time will come and be gone before we know it.

Also,it will be Christmas again before we know it. This will have us ready for Colorado Scrambler and National event. Just have to get all our ducks in a row.

I will put this scramble on the calender and hope for the best, especially if Tim (CJATE) can stay that late in July this year. Have you mentioned it to him Ken? Summer is always hard for me though especially 4th quarter of the federal year but this is close enough that it would be doable for sure on a weekend and may be doable for part of the week. working out a list of trails yet?

I will be living up in Wyoming by then. So I will definitly make this years scramble !!!!!

Looks like I should be able to make it out there this year. :fingerscrossed: Been trying to plan another CO vacation for a couple years now, so this seems to be a perfect opportunity. Just need to figure out the lodging now.

Alright!
Great to have both of y'all!

Scott, George and I were just talking about you minutes ago in my garage wondering if we'd see you or not. Haven't heard from you.

Wyoming huh? Haliburton moving you?
