Since I will be taking "Yard Scrambler" back to JeepAddict tomorrow, this will be my last "fix it up" update.
Since its maiden highway/off-road trip to Boggs and Boulders, I have fixed a few things that needed fixing.
Re-torqued all the suspension mounting bolts, power train bolts, and greased everything back up. Checked all the fluids, and surprisingly, everything is still full, no leaks anywhere. I also re-torqued all the body mount bolts, and replaced the one bolt that fell out. All in all, it made it though its "shakedown" run relatively unscathed.
Since the fan clutch was hitting the 3 core radiator, I installed a new 2 core radiator. The fan clutch now has adequate room. The only issue now, since the little rubber "hood bumpers" are shot, the hood just makes contact with the radiator cap. New rubber bumpers will fix this.
The other major "problem" was the wore out steering shaft. I installed a Borgeson steering shaft, problem solved. I wish I would have installed this part a long time ago.
The only other "problem" i have been having with this "jewel" has been an inconsistent/rough idle condition. I found a leak at the intake manifold to head interface, re-torqued the bolts, and eliminated that vacuum leak. Still did not idle good. For some reason, when I set the timing, I set it like a feedback model, this was wrong. I re-set the timing to around 10 degrees advance at idle, with the advance line plugged, this greatly improved the idle, but it still wasn't right. I also cleaned/drilled out the idle tubes, no dice. Finally, with my trusty can of starting fluid, started checking for vacuum leaks. And of course, I found one. The infamous Carter BBD "wore out throttle shaft/vacuum leak". Surprisingly, in all my years of running BBD carburetors, I have never had this problem show up before. First time for everything.
The problem causing throttle shaft.
I have a spare, junk Carter BBD I keep for parts, so I swapped throttle plates over.
And now, this thing is idling much better. I fine tuned the timing/mixture/idle speed, and this thing is idling great. I am about 95% happy with it now. It is idling around 650 RPM, pretty smooth, and it is no longer stalling out.
The only other problem with this carburetor is the choke. I have been fiddling with and adjusting it, still couldn't get it "right". The choke is actually binding, so it does not always come on when cold, sometimes wants to hang up when it should release. And of course, I finally find the problem, two nights before I am bringing it back.
The shaft that the choke plate attaches to is actually binding in the bore in the upper carburetor body. I might try swapping shafts for one I have in my junk box, but I believe the bore in the carburetor body is "egged/slotted". I do not have a spare that is worth swapping on. A store bought "rebuilt" carburetor might be the only way to fix this, unfortunately.
As we all no, these things are never "finished". But, I had to draw a line in the sand eventually, and so I made this week my last opportunity to work on "Yard Scrambler". The few minor issues that I am passing on to Tommy:
1) needs a rebuilt carb/replacement upper carb body so that the choke works
2) change out the speedometer for one that works properly (speedo head is messed up, odometer works, speedometer sticks)
3) change out speedometer gear to get the speedometer to read right (shows 8 mph too fast now)
4) change out oil pressure gauge, current one reads too low
5) change chrome bumper out for black one, finish installing brush guard
That's about it. Besides the carburetor, the other "issues" are fairly easy to fix, and we already have the parts to take care of them.
One more quick picture:
That's it for now.
