are all cj-8's scramblers?

Mine is listed as "UP" on my Colorado title, which translates to "Utility Passenger" according to the CDR, and includes broncos, landies, and Cherokees.

In 96 my bronco was listed as wagon. As was my cherokee in 86. Then sometime before 2000 the bronco switched to SUV.

Can't remember what is on the Jeep. I will have to look that up.

Overlander was a marketing package for the 1984 model year only and for Australia only. However previous to that and also along with it in '84 you could get one that looked just like an overlander minus the stripes. You could also get a Laredo and renegade in Australia too. And you could also get a CJ7 with a world cab version of the hardtop:

Same here.
I was talking with a guy from Beuna Vista at the Colorado Scramble this summer when I noticed he had Truck plates and I had just been told by the DMV that I can't have Truck plates for my Scrambler. Maybe each county decides what category our vehicle fits in? No big deal, just a few extra tax dollars..

Did you see they changed the laws about collector vehicles? I know that my 81 can now be grandfathered in, but I can't remember how recently that's been extended...i.e. if your 84 could do the same. Now that I'm moving, it doesn't mean a tinker's dam, but it would've been nice to have it registered for 5yrs at a time had I been staying.

I recently bought my 1983 CJ8 Scrambler and when I went to title it in Alabama, they asked me what I wanted to call it and what to classify it as. I figured since I had a back seat in it and wanted to carry more than two people, I classified it as an SUV. As for the "model" I had them put CJ8. They would have put whatever I said apparently!!

Guess I can no longer run this forum because I don't own a Scrambler, sorry guys, later.

What's really weird is that you're an SOA member, and you technically don't own a "Scrambler".

I'm considering starting the 8OA Club, if you're interested.

Then I guess I'm with BW. See you all later! ;)

And as for SOA, I actually checked the membership requirements before I joined: my 8ish conglomeration counts!

...I noticed he had Truck plates and I had just been told by the DMV that I can't have Truck plates for my Scrambler. ...No big deal, just a few extra tax dollars..

Standing at the Colorado DMV counter some years ago, I queried the employee about the difference between the '81 and '83 plates, since the '83 receives truck plates. He consulted the computer and indicated that something (I don't recall what) on the title determined whether it got truck plates or other. Naturally, I assumed the inception of the CJ-8 in 1981 was classified as "utility" like other CJ models, and later CJ-8 models were reclassified as truck bodies. The information you've posted regarding your '84 model doesn't jive with that reasoning.

You might be interested to know that the '83 "truck" plates are taxed higher than the '81 non-truck plates, which also hasn't made much sense to me other than the narrow age difference.

Lastly, I recently inquired about different plate status in CO and discovered the "Classic Vehicle" option noted in a previous post. The counter employee indicated this would be the best option for me, but I don't see the advantage of paying 5 years of taxes in advance. This would only make sense from a speculative stance, as you'd hedge against future tax increases during that five year period.

Hmmmm interesting topic. I will have to pull my title and see what it has on it. My world cab (with windows) only has a small emblem on the back that says CJ8.

You just have no idea when to quit.

Would you care to elaborate, or did you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? From my perspective, the post I've submitted appears to follow this thread's topic, so most readers may find it to be of some value. This thread is, in fact, attempting to distinguish the difference between a Scrambler and a CJ-8. Therefore, my notation regarding this forum's official name being CJ-8.com, as opposed to Scrambler.com, appears to offer some relevance to the subject we are discussing. Thus, I don't understand your comment regarding me not understanding when to cease discussing the topic and further clarifying information requested by the original poster.

This thread is full of fail... They are all Scramblers. I don't care if it has the stickers, emblem or nothing...

wow.. thanks for all the great responses and perspectives regarding titling etc. If the scrambler purchase works out i would plan on a restoration with proper scrambler trim.

a little more about me, like i said before i am new to cj-8's but not to jeeps or restoration. I am currently working on a 1965 mustang coupe - convertible conversion using a midwest heavily rusted convertible for the rare parts. All the structural supports etc were sourced new from reproduction companies. A couple years back geesh.. it must be 6 years now i "finished a body off on my 80 cj5. below are a couple pics from that project. it has 86' widetracks with d44 rear, M.O.R.E mounts, 360 with TBI T-176 short output D300. 4" alcan springs and an acme top / doors.

man i wish it were still this clean!

Probably not much savings in your case except if the tax rate increases (which seems to happen pretty frequently). In my case the real savings would be in getting an emission test only once every 5 years. Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention in 2009 when I renewed my plates... If I had realized I was eligible to switch to collector plates, I could have been grandfathered in (now it looks like I have 8 more years to go). They do also offer "Classic Truck" plates, which I would love to get (the best of both worlds).

Yes! And the title thing being discussed while great info for some is not relevant to what they were called from the factory, or by the dealer, or in an advertisement or whatever. Titles normally go by a weight class, which also is not gospel to say the least. I've had em titled all different ways normally as a result of an input error during a transfer from another state or a DMV (nj's motor vehicle department) being incompetent and or not giving a crap. At the end of the day all I want from them is to drive legally on the road. And to me my CJ-8s are scramblers and my scramblers are CJ-8s.

No matter what the title says the Vin number distinguishes it as a CJ8

Apparently, I'm not very familiar with vehicle registrations, so I'm not following your timeline advantage/disadvantage. Wasn't a renewal in '09 good until '10, and then you could've simply switched to collector plates? Is it the emissions ordeal into which you'd have been grandfathered? Lastly, what is the 8 year commitment you reference?
