FINALLY!!! A Build Thread of My '82 Scrambler!

I remember you talking about him and his rod and how he helps. It's great being able to have it in the family. Glad you have a good relationship with him. Definitely makes the holidays fun.

Ow God that's beautiful. The color in that paint job is just awesome. Please pass that on to him.

Thanks. I get along with my in-laws great. I was the only guy my wife (or her two sisters) dated that knew anything about cars. The first time I walked into his shop and started naming cars and the correct years and asking questions I was in. Been great ever since.

This is the poster board I made for him to display at shows with his truck:

Got the new Crown sending unit installed in the tank. Went in with no problems. I also got a tank strap. It is a little long but it will be easy to modify and will work perfectly. I got the stainless fuel lines ran and I loosely installed the headers to check clearances. Right now the motor is in but not tightened down. I will have to do some adjusting left and right to make sure everything clears.

Differences between the Crown (Right) and Omix-ada (Left) sending unit (the Crown unit has the brass float that I bought separately installed):

What type of 350 do you have?

The front accessory brackets/serpentine set up look just like my TBI 350. The valve covers are the same, too. The rear mounted distributor definitely predates LT/LS engines. Does your block have a fuel pump opening on the passenger side?

Looks like a TBI 350 with a carb set up, just curious:thumbsup:

I'm not sure. I assumed the centerbolt heads were LT engines but I'm no expert on engine identification. I know an engine builder who said he would run the block numbers for me and give all the info on it but he hasn't done that yet. I had noticed it was very similar to yours and I've been watching your TBI thread. I would like to go to fuel injection on this thing at some point.

Yes thats not a Lt1 or 4 Just seen the pictutes Unless alot of work was don't to convert it over to standard 350 stuff..
Center valve cover bolts started in 87. Lt1 came in 92-97 aluminum heads vet, camaro, firebird, cast heads roadmaster, impala.

Yeah, I did a little SBC identification research last night and I think it is just a TBI 350 with an Edelbrock intake and carb. Still works fine for my needs. Would have been nice to have something with a bit more horsepower but this is simple and no cost for now. I guess I could put a better cam in but that always leads to other upgrades and I'd rather spend that money on getting it all put back together for now.

If its a TBI 350 with TBI heads, don't waste any money on a cam, the stock heads wont work well. A TBI 350 is probably best left stock. They have good low RPM torque and make decent mileage. They can make more power, but lots of money involved to build them. If you want more power, probably best to swap the engine out.

If it is a TBI engine, might be worth putting a stock intake/TBI fuel system on it:wave:

Just ordered a set of Percy's Seal-4-Good header gaskets from Summit Racing. I've used these on several other builds including the 360 in my J10 and on my Father-in-law's '36 Ford 383 Stroker and never had a problem with a blown gasket. Plus Summit is running a sale right now!

do you need the rest of the exhaust hanger bracket? not only the square plate but the bracket and issolater that bolts to it for the new one you added?

PM me your address and you can have mine. I went a different route when mounting my exhaust.

I swapped some classic turbine wheels with roller tires onto the chassis for the time being. I'm swapping some tires around on my Jeeps; XJ is getting a small lift and the 31" BFG's off my J10. J10 is getting a 4" lift and the 33" BFG's off the Scrambler. Scrambler will be getting new 33" BFG MT's on Chrome OEM 15x8 wagon wheels down the road.

Not to hijack your thread but what brand and size of lift are you going with on your XJ? I am in the market for a 3" lift for my '00 XJ. The plan is to put a set of 16x8 LJ Rubicon Moab rims I have and the old factory size tires off of my '05 LJ Rubihara. Mine mainly sees daily driver duty so ride quality is more important than anything. Just curious what your choice is on an XJ lift!

I got a good deal on a used 3" Skyjacker lift. I've always heard good things about the way Skyjacker lifts ride. I bought new Skyjacker nitro shocks for it too. I will probably wait to install it until after I get back from Bantam in June. Since I'm driving the XJ I want to get the best gas milage possible.

Gas tank and skid are finally in! The rolling chassis is mostly complete now. I will be loading it up and moving it back to my house where I can do all the small detail work on it. That should hopefully mean faster progress and more updates! I will also be taking it over to a friends house where we will install 4:10 gears, ARB'S, and rear Warn full-float kit in the axles. This also means we will now start on body and paint work at the father-in-law's shop! I have a new goal to get this done by but I'm not going to say what it is yet, I don't what to jinx it.

While I was in PA for the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival I picked up this Acme full hardtop for the Scrambler. It needs a little cleaning, new attachment hardwear, new lift shocks for the rear hatch, and a new sunroof installed but the price was right...free!
