Epic fails

These people missed the memo that the fan goes inside the fan shroud.

So, I have been driving my Jeep to and from work, down I-77 for the past two weeks. Usually the travel speed is between 80 and 10 mph; in that you go 80 until traffic stops suddenly and then you creep along for the rest of the way. I had removed the brake pedal assembly from the Jeep to adjust the tension spring and put it back in on Sunday. When I did, I had adjusted the rod that screws onto the master cylinder push rod and connects to the pedal assembly. I had given it an extra turn to give a little more length.

Well, I was heading out from work to go home for the evening and got to the end of the company drive way and my pedal hit the floor. I was fortunate that I was able to quickly turn around and come back into the driveway as I was not going very fast and there was no one in front of me. The rod and the part that screws onto it and attaches to the pedal had separated as there were not enough threads left when I adjusted it out to my liking and I DID NOT TEST HOW MANY THREADS WERE LEFT. Totally my fault. I had bought a generic unit off of eBay and it just hasn't been a good experience and now it is no more. I caught a ride home with a co-worker, called OffAgain in New Mexico and ordered a Navajo unit, and went back to wait on a wrecker. I count myself as one lucky dude and am just weathering the "you really aught to just sell it/it's not safe" arguments at home.

Here it is, sitting in the driveway of my office, looking good to go and being undrivable at the same time, waiting on the flatbed.

That is scary but glad no one was hurt, not even the Jeep. That kind of stuff can happen with anything. It just goes with the territory of working on your own stuff.

Turbo engines can be really hard on valves sometimes- They burn thru valves like a blowtorch. :)

Some people shouldn't build stuff............Others shouldn't even touch it.

There's something to be said for knowing your limitations.

What's that thing on top of the tube between the u bolts?

Bump stop extensions.

Here's a pic of what happens when u bolts are left loose for long periods.

It's not a fail when the easier thing to do is sign on the dotted line for a lease on a new fiat Cherokee. :smokin:

Did someone run a regular nut and bolt instead of a center bolt in the spring?

Did someone run a regular nut and bolt instead of a center bolt in the spring?

They used regular non-locking nut on the center pin in combination with an aluminum shim. It was probably more the fault of the aluminum shim getting beat and out of shape than the center pin. That's why I always put in steel shims. ;)
