Perfect response. :rotfl:

You'd think even in a diesel you'd hear the extra rattle

This is how not to recenter a bellhousing for a NV4500. Weld and grind to fit.

Just recently, someone told me to use steel shims instead of aluminum

OK, never used shims. What's the story here?

I am putting 2.5" Rancho springs on the tan CJ-7 this week and noticed the new axle Ubolts came with shims. Do I even need those for a 2.5" lift?

Oh Yes you do. Or you will soon find out what it is like to drive a jeep with a mind of its own. You have to have some negative caster dialed into the axle or the Jeep will want to dart from side to side. Very scary. Much worse than Death Wobble.

I have been there and done that. You can put the axle on the springs and use a angle finder to get close but about 6 degrees is about right. If you can take a measurement from the flat face of the poinon before you tear it down and then match it or more with the right shim. You can get steel ones up to 8 degrees. More than that and you need to re-weld the perches.

Well I'm finally getting around to ditching the extra long shackles on this particular Jeep, so I've been driving it will all kinds of caster problems. Interestingly enough, the rear ubolts came with shims, but the front didn't. Want to explain that one to me?

In my experience, most lift kits do not come with front shims at all, something you have to add. The back shims they include are usually a guess, anyway, they have no idea of your existing driveshaft angle/powertrain length:eek:

choke job
