$143,000.00 Scrambler??????

It's down to $143? I will wait a few more months and see if it goes down a little more. ;)

Oh and it is a CJ5, right? Haha

That's actually a deal, considering base price on a new one is $150K. Add 30K for the diesel option, $7k for lockers, nav, and alarm, and $1k for beadlocks, you could be ct $200K before you know it. Makes you want to quit your job and build/sell 1 of these a year...

Legacy Classic is a forum member. He joined when we had a discussion on his green Scrambler.

I agree!! Chrome? Stainless??? Cha Ching I assume???

It's all chrome and looks great. That does not mean it will perform great though. I'm not looking at receipts until this truck is finished.

Eek, will there be a ceremony with an Ambulance standing by?

LOL!

This is exactly why I've never actually sat down to conduct an accounting of how much I have into my Scrambler.

I think adding up receipts and time spent engineering and constructing on a scrambler build with a reasonable gross margin (30%?),some allowance for buyers negotiation (gas monkey style) Is how you get to $143,000 asking.......

knobs on Atlas shifters need to be turned 90 degrees. Not a fan of the dash layout. It's down to $139k now. I'd rather have mine.

So at what point is a Scrambler no longer a Scrambler? I have no problem with scratch-built CJ-8s (obviously), but I built mine to be a Scrambler as much as I could realistically allow: OEM wiring harness, 95% OEM dash layout, OEM heater/air boxes, OEM seat frames and stock-ish seat covers, OEM steering column, AMC 401/T-18/Dana 300, OEM gas tank, etc. Anyone who knows CJs will be able to look at mine and immediately know what's going on, where, and why. But it's titled as a 7, and uses mostly aftermarket parts, similar to the Legacy 8.

But I've seen some builds (not on the forum) where it's a Scrambler in wheelbase and body only. In my mind, an ULTRA-4 car with a CJ grill isn't a Jeep; it's an ULTRA-4 car.

So where do the Legacy builds fit?

They remind me of the ICON builds, but the ICONs are explicitly not trying to be FJs or a CJ-3Bs; they're expressly something different.

Seriously, on the cost calculation- I once added up all the receipts that I saved from my build, and I came up with a total that would have bought a new Rubicon. That's without labor... I did most of the work while I was "out of work", so I can get a pretty accurate guesstimate of the hours on mine. So if I had to pay someone else to build my Scrambler, I wouldn't be surprised to get a bill for $100k plus. And, I'm not done yet!

When does a Scrambler stop being a Scrambler? I say when you can no longer identify it as one. Nothing but the basic tub and frame are stock or even original on mine, but it's still a Scrambler. Heck, from the factory, Jeep stood for "Just Everyone Else's Parts". The Legacy is a Scrambler in my opinion. There's just as much Scrambler in his as there is in mine. (Although I am titled as a Scrambler, second owner.) The titling on the Legacy is just a way to make an end run around overly restrictive emissions and safety laws. Can't fault him there. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where that cr@p doesn't matter.

Bottom line? What's to dislike? There's a parts list that sounds like everyone's wish list. There's a build quality that we all dream of. There's an aesthetic that looks "right". The price- that's where it hits the fan. As a do-it-yourselfer, it seems ridiculous. But, If I had to build that Scrambler for you, I'd want that much for an identical build.

Hope I didn't step on any toes- no offense meant. Legacy is doing this as a business, and businesses need to make profits. Paying customers seem to be fewer and further between... of course there's always the "You have a bender? Can I borrow the dies?", or "Cool! I'll bring over a six pack and we can build a cage for my Jeep". And I'm not talking about friends- these are people I've just met!!!

By the time I'm finished with my build I may have been able to buy the Legacy.
Why would anyone buy one? Because they can.
