It's coming home.

I'm also toying with the idea of renting a car hauler in Grand Junction tomorrow...and towing it home empty just in case. It would be relatively cheap insurance that we'd get home.

Or make it a back road adventure!

That's exactly what I did when I bought mine from a guy in Crested Butte. He drove it from there to Salida, CO, and we met him there. It was leaking like a sieve, so I was glad to have the trailer to get it home.

I'm sure you'll be fine :)

One more photo with the custom spoiler. I removed it before I sold the Scrambler and re-purposed it as insulation in the cabin.

That's another great pic...

Did it ever say scrambler on the hood on either side? Did you remove it or was it never there from the factory ?

OMG! Are you kidding? Mud? On my brand new Scrambler? Bite your tongue! I'd love to come back through Gateway and over the mountain, but that is still blocked by snow. And I'm sure much of the route you outlined is still covered in some rather mucky stuff, judging from the slimy goo I saw in every bay of the car wash a couple of days ago. I'm actually in Castleton on the Castleton-Gateway road, way up at the top of Castle Valley at about 6000 feet elevation. I drive over to Gateway all the time during the summer to visit the absolutely amazing auto museum. The plan, if I drive, is to take the old Highway 6/50 and only be on the interstate for about 12 or so miles.

Meant to say before - love that "Hayduke Lives" bumper sticker. Used to have that on the license plate frame on mine back in the 80's.

we did that trip, more or less, several years ago, not only would it likely be snowy and muddy still, fording the river could be pretty sporty this time of year....

But if youre bring it home from GJ you could take the old road that parallels I70, a more relaxed drive than the freeway and more in keeping with the nature of our beasts...

enjoy, I'll be watching for you during Safari this year too

Here I go...it's reunion day. Will try to grab a few snapshots on the way home and post this evening.

Well...we're home. The Scrambler has a bit more patina on it than I thought it might, but then so did the last friend I ran into whom I hadn't seen for 20 years. I had not seen any recent pictures. It ran perfectly all the way home. We took the old highway from Grand Junction to the I-70 Westwater exit and it was pretty rough and missing pavement for miles at a time...almost like off-roading. I've seen Jeep roads that were smoother. We got onto the interstate and cruised along at 60 mph for 13 miles. It tracked straight and true, didn't seem to be laboring at all (I'm sure I could easily have gone 5-10 mph faster)...and rode VERY smooth...absolutely NO vibrations. Oil pressure stayed right where it should. Coolant temp barely got into the green until I started climbing the 2000 ft vertical stretch to the cabin and then it almost got to the middle of the green. No leaks of any precious bodily fluids anywhere. All the gauges work perfectly.

I took some photos on the way home and could probably post a few if anyone is interested...hehe.

Jeez...everybody must be out in the garage drinkin' beer and fondling wrenches (with an "r"). OK...a teaser...interior while still in Grand Junction. I'm responsible for the wear on the passenger seat, which used to be the driver's seat. He switched them and the current driver's seat is totally blemish free...no rips...not even any wear visible anywhere on it. I installed the tach on the steering column...but think I may remove it.

By the way, when I checked the mileage, I discovered that he only put 9000 miles (or slightly less) on it in 20 years.

Great to hear you made the drive back safely. Of course we want more pics!

Nah, we're not interested....in a FEW.

Congratulations, sounds like a great reunion.

We're waiting patiently to see your old friend.

Awesome. Glad it gave you no troubles. And yes, more pics of that patina.
