Picked up a Dana 300 with 4 to 1 and twin sticks

So as the title says, I found a deal online for a dana 300 that someone had swapped in the 4 to 1 gears kit and a twin stick set up. I bougt it for less than the parts and this was never installed after the conversion.

It has an adapter/clocking ring for a NV3550. According to the advance adapters catalog, it has the same bolt pattern as the dana 300 only rotated.

So that makes me think I can just bolt it up as is (maybe change the rotation of the ring). Otherwise I would need to take off the ring, and the longer inout shaft and use the inout shaft from the dana 300 I currently have on the Scrambler.

Am I right in my thinking? Anyone done this or know about the NV3550? I have a T-176 that I am planning on mating this t-case to.

In my red Scrambler, I have JB Conversion 4:1 gears in the Dana 300. With the T5/T176 I did NOT use an adapter ring/spacer. When I swapped in the AX15, I had to add the spacer/clocking ring. I will have to look back in my thread, seems like I pulled the input out of the 300 and did something when I went to use it with the AX15.

Around Post #1233 in my red Scrambler thread.

I did not have to do anything to the Dana 300 input, I changed the seal to a double lip seal.

The AX15 output sticks out further then the stock T176/T5, that's where the clocking ring spacer comes into play.

I "think" the NV3500 is the same as the AX15, with regards to the rear output shaft length.

You should be able to just slide this transfer case in, you will have to experiment with the clocking angle to get it to fit. I have a 1" body lift and had no problems, but it is close, especially the stock 300 shifter. The twin stick might be easier to fit.

Your driveshafts will be wrong now, the rear 1" too long, the front 1" too short. Depending on how close to right they were before, you might be OK. You will have to verify this.

Did you have the T176 in there before or are you swapping something out? It should just bolt right up without the clocking ring. Spanks is correct about the input shaft being too long for the Ax15. If you do ever swap in an Ax15, that wierd double lip seal is not necessary. Just use an output seal from a 94 Dakota v6 4x4, (those had the Ax15). The seal from a wrangler will NOT work.

Thanks guys. I was not so worried about the rear driveshaft since it was already stretched a little far due to the lift (it is the stock length). Now it would be less extended by 0.75”. But I am worried about the front now. I had forgotten about that. It will need to extend even further.

I don’t really want to take this apart to remove the longer input shaft and replace with the stock shaft from my current dana 300. So I want to use the clock ring. Maybe I will just need a longer front driveshaft.

Oh and I have had the t-176 the whole time. Always been the same transmission. Almost swapped in a tf-999. But didn’t.

I think what we're saying is to just remove the clocking ring and run it. It should bolt right up and fit perfectly. The clocking ring does two things - allows for the somewhat longer output shaft of e.g. the AX15 or NV, while also allowing you to rotate the Tcase a little to mount it correctly. You should not need it at all to bolt up the T176 and you should not have to modify a thing.

Yes, what walkerhoundvm said. Take off the clocking ring and it will swap right in. Do not add the clocking ring in with the T176. The splines won't be engaged as much.

But you might need to swap the input shaft for a shorter one if it really does have the AA long input shaft installed. Or, if it has the long input shaft installed, run it with the adapter, just clocked up for more ground clearance. :twocents:

Doh - I missed the part about the input shaft. I guess that'd make the NV output shaft shorter than the AX15 output shaft?

Gets complicated. Depends on if you have a dodge or gm nv4500. One of the tail housings is shorter than the other. Only the dodge had a 23 spline output shaft. But you can swap the dodge shaft into a gm transmission and keep the gm tail housing. Like I said, gets complicated. :shrug:

It was a Jeep NV 3550 transmission he was planning on attaching it to. And it has an input shaft that is longer than stock by the same width as the clocking ring. So I should be able to use it as is, but I may just have to deal with the length of the front drive shaft. I think. I have never done this, so ….

Or remove the ring and put the input shaft from my current t-case onto this one. But I am leery of doing that, but may have to. Won't know until I start the process. The front driveshaft length won't be known until it is installed and flexed to see if it is maxed out.

But as I said when I started, I am new to this conversion and am all ears about the swap.

So the real question is what are you buying as a DD until you figure this out and installed ? Is the new jeep on order yet ? :)

Not yet. That will be next year probably. Hopefully we can get the Impala put together and I could use that or get my truck back from my son when he can take the impala. But I am hoping I can at least drive in rear wheel drive within a weekend.

On the driveshaft issue...you may want to consider shortening the rear for use on the front, and get a proper length shaft for the rear. :twocents:

That sounds like work. I am planning to ask some VA Scrambler guys to see if they might have one that is the right size.
