Finished rebuilding and mounted my first 8274.

Not as nice as some I have seen done, but it works well and looks a lot better than it did before.

One more item down on the wish list for the Scrambler.

Just need to stamp a number in the JEEP SE label spot.

where can i find a used one???

They come up fairly regularly because there are a lot out there, but people generally now know what they're worth and good deals are harder and harder to find. Searching for "wench" is the old trick for finding sellers who are less likely to know what they have. I hit craigslist every now and then to see if any have come up. I always hope to find one in a photo of a vehicle for sale where I can make them a decent offer to come and remove it or an estate sale where they have no clue.

I made periodic checks on craigslist and I noticed people are selling a lot more stuff on Facebook Marketplace which is where I found mine. It took me a while to find one that was a good price and decent shape. You just have to be ready to jump on those priced cheap because they go fast.

It's true about FB Marketplace, but I've had zero luck buying or selling on there. Total garbage on both sides.

I have had pretty good luck on there recently. I listed a transmission and a set of aluminum wheels on Craigslist and the Marketplace and they both sold off marketplace in a few days.

Just takes persistence in looking, and sometimes even out of state. I knew a month ahead of time I was going to the west coast to visit my sister during thanksgiving. Started looking and found a very nice one 3 weeks before traveling and contacted the guy and he was nice enough to just hold on to it until I got out there. What can I say, Jeep and Bronco guys are just good people.

I bought an 8274 for $300 in working condition recently on FB marketplace. You have to be patient and persistent.

And act fast and find it shortly after it is posted if it is a good deal.
I gave I think $325 for mine 10 years ago and it came with a universal style mounting plate which could be cut down for a CJ. It was on craigslist for 1 hour before I contacted the seller and bought it 4 hours later.

The last one I found was on the bumper of an old state pickup on a used car lot. I called the lot and asked what they would sell the winch for. $400 later, it is on my jeep.

They do sell fast, but keep rebuild costs in mind when you are looking. It doesn't take many broken parts to get over $1000 "invested" in one.

"Warren wench" LOL. I've gotten them as cheap as $100 using different search terms. The last 8274 I bought came off of a 1979 GMC wrecker. Guy was taking off all the wrecker stuff and wanted to build a street truck out of it. As sdsupilot mentioned, parts can add up fast, so check the cases/ aluminum bits and make sure they aren't cracked.

I got one for "Free" years ago. That ended up being the one I have the most money in. Bought a 79 Waggy to get the winch. $300. Sold the waggy for $350 (only discovering AFTER I'd made a deal that the thing had a 401 in it....I had assumed it was a 360). So I had a "free" winch and $50 to start.

Top cover was busted. Motor was shot. Solenoid pack was gone. Cable was bad. Had to buy a mounting plate. By the time I got everything as it should be I think I had $600-700 in it.

The 8274's can be found, but it takes a full-court-press kinda approach on checking the classifieds. Found both of these on FB market place for $150 and $250 respectively. Be prepared to pay out for the warn replacement/rebuild parts, as well as the line, depending on what you want to run (synthetic v steel). Both did come with the end brackets as well, just needed to replace the bushing sets to get them operational, and figured might as well rebuild the brakes too. Patience and persistence is key-

In 2017 when I worked in Littlerock AK I found one on CL for $200. Over the years I have purchased most of the parts to rebuild it.
Be prepared to pay out for the warn replacement/rebuild parts,
You are right about that

How about this one. New Old Stock
