30" Only 33" or so between wheelwells... That was the reason I changed. The old was 32 and the lid conflicted with the spare.

Why does it look like foil tape all over the left side of the dash? I thought maybe it was an overlay, but almost looks like the foil tape they put on duct work seams.

Because it is "camo" tape they put all over the dash... and the can that holds that tach? soup can...

My Jeep may not run since the loss of oil pressure...... But while waiting for the engine I bought the MORE steering brace. @bigwalton mentioned that even with the steering box mount he thought the brace was a good idea..... and I'm a sucker for 'overkill is better' so at least I've accomplished SOMETHING.

Long story short: costs are insane and merit going higher. Final project was about $40,000 after all the ancillaries. So I backed it and I've bought a 345 horse 351w with serpentine system, air con compressor and aluminium heads from Phoenix Engine for a 'mere' $13,000. But at least that should just drop straight in... without needed ancillaries. So it's a bit easier to swallow than $40,000.
The engine was meant to be here in July but now looks like August so I'm still waiting after all. I'm losing my mind not driving my 8.
So not my dream engine after all, but at 1/3 the price I decided frugality was the better part of valour.
I'll keep y'all posted.

Old engine out, engine bay painted. Wren I get home from this trip I should have my correct pump. After nearly 9 months of waiting, my new engine from Phoenix Engine turned up: 345 horse 351w. Aluminum heads, 2.25" valves, cam, high flow oil and high flow water pump...... and therein lay the issue; despite clearly spelling out numerous times that I needed passenger input water pump, the engine turned up with a driver input water pump.
So, I'll be tearing apart the front to correct it...... proving once again that Murphey was indeed an optimist.
So I've pulled the old engine, painted the first coat of black in the engine compartment (the second will go on tomorrow) and will begin getting ready to swap in the new engine. Once the engine is in I'll paint behind the battery. I'm using a black appliance epoxy that i used on the underside which has held up incredibly well over the years, even in the harsh Florida climate.
So, I'll be tearing apart the front to correct it...... proving once again that Murphey was indeed an optimist.

Baby steps: corrected the water pump..... now it's the way I actually ordered it. The serpentine system was a pain to figure out, but now that I've figured it out isn't too bad. I'm a bit nervous that the power steering pump will hit the steering shaft and I'll have to change it to the Saginaw serpentine.... but I'll have to install the engine to figure that out as it is just too close to call. I put the motor mounts on the new engine and have gotten all the sensors, brackets and senders installed.
I painted behind the flywheel so that there's no bare metal. The flywheel is on and the pilot bushing is installed. I've lubed it with white lithium grease: any thoughts on that @spankyrjs ? That's what i used on the last clutch I put in 6000 miles ago and it's looking decent.
Lastly, I cut off the 81 short shock towers, so tomorrow I'll weld on the F150 towers.
Tomorrow, I'll also get the clutch plate and pressure plate installed and hopefully get the engine in.
The big unknowns for me now are the power steering and associated hoses, the new brake proportioning valve for the rear discs and the plumbing for the air con. Time will tell. The power steering is what's causing me the most sleeplessness.

Man, that’s gonna be REALLY nice in your Scrambler. Can’t wait to see it installed.
On another note, I have a really nice C6 transmission that I would gladly donate to your project, if you promise to use it.
It would bolt up nicely behind that 351.
