I got my Scrambler in 2006. From then until this spring my Jeep would always start unless the battery was dead. I've gone through 4 fuel pumps this year. The jeep has been down more than its been available for me to drive. The folks that work on it said that finding a good pump is difficult.
1. Is there a good mechanical fuel pump out there?
2. Should I save $$ for some version of efi?

Thank you.

What exactly is happening to the fuel pumps? Are they leaking, arms breaking/deforming, diaphragms tearing or failing?

I have also went through 4 mechanical pumps on my 258 ,2 Napa and 2 Carter!
One broken arm ,3 ruptured diaphragms and now considering going electric or full efi.

Last was a broken diaphragm. They had talked about placing an inline check valve but, instead, went with another pump. Which just failed.

I would recommend a 12V electric pump - probably with a prefilter - by pass the mechanical pump
Or a quality mechanical pump - maybe Delphi?

What make pumps have you had?

Other will have better recommendations - but it would be something like this

If you go electric you will need a relay to feed power to it
I was thinking about an inline electric pump. I mentioned it to a local fix it place and they didn't seem to know what I was taking about but they were going to research it. I wish I was competent and confident at tackling a project like this but I'm not so I'm relying on others.

Thank you for your input and the information. I'm definitely looking into it.

BTW.... I've used whatever one rock auto carries as well as crown and, I believe Omix. There's one more that I got from a local parts place.

I beleive Carter was the original manufacturer:

I reckon I have not had this problem yet. My '86 CJ-7 still has the original fuel pump, rusted to hell, still works, might have to clean it up and reuse it. My '85 CJ-7 has an older replacement pump from before JeepAddict or myself owned it, so close to 15 years old by now.....

I see NAPA lists a Delphi branded pump and their own house brand pump, not sure if they both suck, too.

Unfortunately, this issue of crap aftermarket replacement parts does not seem like it will ever end. I at least try to buy all my crap from one place so when I have a problem at least no hassle on warranty, but still sucks ass changing out the same defective parts over and over again.

Yes I would keep your running old pump as long as you can !
I changed mine only because it looked very old never had an issue until I tried new pumps .

Thank you. I feel like I need a buffet of pumps.

Yesterday, I called Collins brothers. I only called to try and find out the brand of the original pump. Rock tractor posted that it might be a Carter. I thought Collins brought might know and they might have a thought on a viable replacement. Nope. I ended up speaking to a guy in the service dept. He went on and on about how bad they are these days. And he had no suggestions for a trustworthy replacement.

Sounds like some type of chinee conspiracy to me to keep us from driving our older vehicles. I’ll bet their fuel pumps work on theirs. Otherwise their leader Ching Chang would lob an arm off.
