1981 CJ8 Project “Penny”

They are so shiny now they kinda stick out like a dog's bollocks. Looks like you'll need to restore the rest of the 8 now to match.

Yep, it’s even flat black... I might try to patina it... original are plastic so they look gray as they age...

Planning to clean up and drive... full restoration as a retirement project

Butterfly stickers stay though right?

Thank you to @AdamH for helping today to remove two wheel drive transmission, still need to ID it but appears to be TF with a different tail... ran into a slow down as the flywheel bolts are 1/2x20, which had to be ordered. So maybe by the weekend the T4/Dana 300 will be installed. In the meantime, a little cleaning and painting

Any plans to soak that undercarriage in fluid film?

This thread has some compelling before and after pics of aged undercarriage coming back to life:

Thanks for the link, I recall reading about Fluid Film and may try using on tunnel after cleaning before reinstall transmission.

Prepping for transmission install, more cleaning left, but tried the Fluid Film suggestion by @SKT . Before and after

Looks great! Recommend allowing that first coat to soak in for a week or two, then hit is again.

Pros: FF stays wet, which allows it to ‘creep’ in cracks and crevices. It really shows it’s performance after a period of time and perhaps a couple applications.

Cons: Can be a bit messy when working on the undercarriage, but it can be washed/scrubbed off if needed. The wetness can also mask minor leaks.
