1981 RHD Scrambler build (UK spec)

any updates?

That was the update:D

Hopefully that wheel arch is getting swapped round this week and then the plan is that over christmas i will get the tub sealed and primed and undersealed, but don't hold your breath as in February it will be 4 years since i started this simple project

Finally had some time to spend on the old girl.:bacon:

Welded a plate behind where the left hand drive bits were instead of trying to fill loads of holes up.
Should be a lot easier to fill with weld/filler and sand it all back down to make the bulkhead look original......ish.
Even welded the heat shield for the exhaust on (the red oxided bit!)

Recycled the old battery mount channels.

Cut the square hole for the electrics which will be slightly higher than it should be as i used and enlarged what must be the left hand drives drainage hole from the heater box. Hope i haven't caused an issue with either the heater box or made it really, really, really hard to change fuses now:huh:

Also punched the two 1.5" holes underneath, which i am not sure are used or not?.
I am thinking they may of been used for the air conditioned models hoses, but better putting them in now just in case

And the speedo cable hole which is the 3/4" hole just to the left of the square hole

Still going!

The Wheel arch that came welded in wrong has finally been swapped round, just needs the welds sanding down and its good to go.

And last job was to weld the jacks bracket back down to where it came from, not sure if its an original part as i thought the jack lived under the hood, but its gone back to where it was in the old tub.

Ive done more work on it today than in the last six months but i have definitely enjoyed myself today :)20131228_145227.jpg

I had a 79 CJ7 that had the jack mounted by the driver's seat. It was in a bag with the lug wrench.

So it may well be genuine then?

Looking at the 81-86 manual it seems i should of had a hydraulic jack?

Let me have a look i may have one out of an 85 CJ7, would you be willing to pay the shipping to the US for one?

Absolutely... let me know if you have one... that would be great. It is 15 degrees here this morning, so heat would be great!!!

The jack was mounted to the floor with that oem bracket you show through 1980 on all CJ models. Then some where in '81 it went to under the hood. Since it was a changeover year some early 81s might have had it. Or someone previous to you put it there on your old tub ;)

It has always been there as the black paint or dip that the factory used was under the bracket and unpainted, some-how it hadn't rusted away like the rest of the floor had around it:confused:

Is there anyway of telling the build date of the Scrambler as the VIN just says its an 81?. As it is Montana blue and narrow track that adds up with the 81, just wondered if it could be narrowed down anymore, via the serial number maybe?

Nope RHD heater core is on whats your drivers side.

I had to do a bunch of clean up in the garage tonight and climbed into the UK CJ7 RHD to see if I had similar holes... I don't have holes like that, but I have a plate over 2 holes... so I am thinking your A/C might have merit. on a side note that isn't related to your build, I looked up under the dash and I do have the RHD top piece of the heater unit, so now it looks like I only need the bottom portion... good news after the day I had!!!

I can take a pic if you would like, but the plate is basically over the 2 holes and screwed in... it doesn't look too much like the holes you drilled though... they are smaller.

Will keep an eye out for a lower heater box for you then.;)

Looking at this LHD heater box i have then the RHD heater box is essentially a mirror image of the LHD unit, but the heater matrix has its pipes coming out in a slightly different place. Also the resistor for the blower motor appears to not be mounted in the unit like it is on the RHD one, unless i am missing something.

Will get some photos when i have chance of this exceptionally interesting part.:rotfl:

Yeah, I spent about 1/2 hour last night looking at the Scrambler one and looking at where it would go on the RHD one and I came to the same conclusion... it is a mirror image, but really no way to use a LHD one in there... bummer.
