I always like to prep for paint by sandblasting. I painted my '81 with 2 part epoxy primer 5 years ago and it doesn't show any signs of age or failure. So I guess the best thing for me to do with this '83 build is the same thing I did then. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
 
When I was in the fabrication business and needed to paint Galvanized steel I would first clean it with a 50/50 solution of Vinegar and water or you could use a acid etching solution. I never found any primers that would work worth a hoot.
 
Having said you can't get paint to stick to HDG the corner post and beam along the bottom in this pic has been roasting in the sun for 12 years and shows no sign of failureImageUploadedByTapatalk1440900560.648994.jpg
It's just one of those things. You can get lucky
 
I steam cleaned mine then wire wheeled it to knock down what little rust nodes that were left. I then sprayed it with phosphoric acid, let it dry, then used Tractor Supply enamel primer and gloss black farm implement paint. In order to add brake line anchor points to my rear axle for my disc brake conversion I'm going to have to grind an area to weld tabs to it. When done I can just use a small brush to paint to match with the same can I used everywhere else. There's always going to be something you're going to want to add, cut or modify. Nothing against powder coating but it's "one and done" with that stuff. On the hand railing I build I have it PC'd semi-gloss black and it holds up great but there's never any modifying after the fact.

Not much to report other than I am trying to get the frame sand blasted.
 
I finally got the frame sand blasted and painted. Primed and 2 coats of Tractor Supply tractor paint. I think this is great paint but it will take almost 48 hours to dry.

Yes you can but I sprayed this one with their rattle cans since my spray gun was out of service and I wanted to get it painted before it rusted in this 90% humidity in Louisiana this week.
 
Frame looks sweet.
I don't know how you live in that soup... it has been like that all week up here and in the 90s... looking forward to the break today... 75 and very little humidity.
Last night I cleaned up the shop... walked in the house and the wife just looked and laughed.
I was completely soaked... even through a pair of Carhart pants which is pretty difficult to do.

CB ... don't know how you live with your cold winters. We all learn how to deal with our extremes though. It's easy here. We just do most of our work early in the morn or later in the day and learn how to dress. The good side is we get to see a lot of Bikinis for about 10 months out of the year. I can take the heat. I don't own any Carhart pants. LOL
 
I finally got to try out the sewer drain cleanout to clean the insides of the frame tube. It works just fine but I wish I would have bought the 1/4 inch one instead because it would fit through most of the existing frame holes. I first ran it through with air and then rain it through with it attached to my pressure washer hose. It's a little messy but it does exactly what I had hoped it would do. This could be the answer to cleaning out the frame tubes. I may even try building a paint pot so that I can pressurize the pot and attach about 15 ft of hose with the nozzle on the end and try to coat the inside of the frame tube with a good coating. When I'm completely finished with this it may be something that can be passed from one member to another. Then again the 1/4 inch one only cost about $18,00.

I bought a few cans of Eastwood internal frame coating and it comes with a multi-orifice nozzle and a few feet of tubing. It is much smaller than what you have but it worked well.
 
DO NOT MESS WITH THE HARDENER! Just wait for it to dry. That stuff WILL affect you long term.

I'm going to try and get back on the Scrambler heavy this week. I need to sand blast the axles tomorrow and then I'll be able to mount those and the new 2 1/2 springs on and then the LS1 can go back in place.
Does anyone have a brake pedal assembly for a automatic transmission I can buy? I could remove my clutch pedal and modify my brake pedal but I would prefer to replace it completely. I would just buy a new one but I can seem to find one. This build should start being much more fun soon.
 
Make sure you really want the automatic pedal. I installed one in mine and I actually like the smaller manual pedal better. On more than one occasion my left size 14 wished there was more real estate on hard braking. The auto pedal is easily twice as wide as the manual, and it all goes to the left.

A major setback today. The 5 hp electric motor on my compressor burnt up today. It's funny, I can live just fine without a woman in my life but if the compressor leaves I become useless. Just another temporary setback.
 
Not much to report on but I do have the media blasting lined up and my painter came buy to look things over today too. Hope to get it blasted next week.
 
I finally got the axles blasted and painted. I should be able to start making progress again.
