1984 CJ-7 LS upgrade

Purchased this 7 about 20 years ago while working in Houston. It’s originally a dark brown but had an Earl Schieb paint job in red with no body prep before I bought it. The paint in the body lines is popped and will flake in small pieces if you put a thumb nail under it. I Had already put a 1986 CJ-7 D44 in the rear, upgraded to 4.10 gears with a mechanical locker after buying it. It has always been some what reliable Jeep but early in the summer of 2019 around 177k it developed a loud lower end knock. After side lining it, we decided this past winter to go with an LS swap. We are currently have this being done local by a builder who does everything and you get the turn key completed vehicle, so I probably won’t be able to answer too many questions. the motor is currently at the performance shop getting tanked & Magnafluxed and new cam bearings & the like installed. We are staying with stock parts and stock hp. With wanting reliability being the main goal for long term driving, that seemed the best for us. I will add pics as we go, but hopefully in the next 6 weeks should have the Jeep.

I would be interested in what a ball park turn key in 6 weeks is if you wouldn't mind saying. I went with a 258 I bought to rebuild and blew my budget out of the water with a battleship. I'm probably 10 months in. You know how it is, one thing leads to another in upgrades and improvements.

Sounds like a good plan. Will you also redo the paint? And what trans will you run?

We are running a fully gone through and rebuilt gm 4l60e transmission on it. They performed what ever upgrades are needed on, which I don’t remember what they said they were.

I would love to get it back to dark brown, but really don’t want to have to blast it and repaint. The day job for the engine guy is paint and body, so he is going to look at it while he has it and let us know what he thinks. I would love to get the shitty red paint off of it.

That would be cool to get it back to the original brown. Regardless, should be a great driver with the 5.3/4l60.

Both Jeeps came out of storage today, hopefully on track for getting it over to the builder on Weds. he is slightly backed up with work so it may be delayed a couple days. Block was tanked and magnafluxed, all came out great. Starting to get real.

You should have Big Walton move this over the LS swap subforum.

Green light!

Dropped the 7 off finally this evening to get the party started. It was a 4 mile drive and every half mile getting there I was less and less confident I was going to make it. The last half mile was about 40mph in 4th gear, gas for about 3 seconds, clutch and then gas to keep what power was left. I am confident I would not have been able to make it back home again.

Will update with pics as he sends them to me.

Tagging for info. I've always said I'd stick with the 258 in my Jeeps, but my FIL has a burb with the 5.3 and he's pretty much destroyed the rest of the burb, so whenever he continues making the truck scrap, I might pull the 5.3 for a Jeep transplant.

Like any project, this is in another holding pattern while we wait for back ordered parts to come in. That’s ok, only been waiting for years for this. 😂

You’re not the only one. But FedEx straight up lost my stuff.
