1984 Overlander

Pics off a camera newer than 40 years old!!!!

Get er dun!!!

Well, my camera that is older than my newer cell phone that I had to use for these pictures is currently unfindable.

I did drive it around today. Fun like the postal but nowhere near the blindspots.

So far I pulled off the pass door panel to fix a spun nut in the door handle and the front fender flare on the dr side since they are all torn up. I have to shred the flares piece by piece to spin the rubber, square thingys and then pop the screw back in because I cannot access the screw heads due to lots of AU cow sh!t and some sort of black substance thats really tough. Its very complete down to the factory carpet. It is missing the head liner. I plan on pulling the inside this weekend and see just how bad the rust is. The front floors will need some repair work. All lights, gauges, signals, etc work. Has factory AMC keys still and rare slate blue interior. Build tag says 1/84 so I assume one of the early ones. I do like the slate blue interior. I plan on getting lots more pictues this weekend. Maybe even get somebody to race me in the postal...

Glad you got it back to your place safely, the Jeep looks great! I really like the slate blue interior, especially with the Olympic White exterior. Garnet and slate blue are my two favorite interiors, along with the base model stuff! It is unique to have the slate blue interior in your '84 considering it was only found in the 82-83 models here in the US! Do you know if the slate blue on the Overlanders was optional or was AMC just using up their left over interior parts since yours was an early production '84 model? Also, do you know if a rear headliner was ever offered with the Overlander tops?

Am I seeing an AMC compass on the dash pad?

Glad it made it to the states safely. Are you planning to restore this one too? I know you have several projects right now, where does this one fit in?

Keep the pictures coming!

I have the headliner from my postal that goes over the front seats sitting on a shelf.

Bigwalton,
I know the postals for sure have the headliner over the front portion of the top over the front seats; my two postals both have this as does my extra postal top. My question was regarding the rear section of the Overlander tops. I was curious if the back 2/3's of the top had an optional headliner or if the headliner over the rear was standard with the Overlander tops. JerseyJeep's Overlander as well as several others I have seen have had a rear headliner; just wondering if this was standard or optional!

Sweet! I love it. Its so cool to see one back in the states and you gotta love it when a plan comes together. I know what it took to get it here, and you should be commended for your dedication and addiction

From what I have researched, slate blue and nutmeg were offered as the denim interiors in the overlanders with the graphics you see here. I have actually not seen one with a factory black interior, but that doesnt mean it didnt happen. But with only about 200 overlanders made total, these are the colors that have shown up so far. In one of the pictures in the Overlander brochure you see slate blue also... and yes I agree its odd that slate blue was offered in 84.

Mine has a rear headliner and I am pretty sure that was factory and not an option. With the rear section finished off with rear seat, carpet, wheel houses, and dual dome lights, it would be odd to me not to have a headliner back there too.

Also, in contrast, mine has an export tag with date 10/84. Mine also has "joop" stamped sides instead of "jeep" stamped sides, which normally indicates a 1985 scrambler here in the states. So an assumed later one.

Again, congrats!

The Good. The Bad. and The Different...

Interior floors from the seats back are solid. The front floors are a different story. Side cowl rusty too.

And the strange CJ-7 sized, extended roll bar. It mounts like a 7 would and is the same size. The postals and later model Overlanders have the standad Scrambler sized roll bar mounted inside. I've seen other early Overlanders with this same set up.
You can see the plugged holes from where the front of a "Scrambler" rollbar could have mounted.
"It's long and skinny, you could paint it silver and it would look like a kickstand" Anybody... :rotfl:

Awesome, that's pretty managable rust, right? Mr. Beep has the triangular cowl panels.

Very very nice.
I thought it came standard issue rust holes in the front floor pans for extra ventilation :)

Your roll bar is very strange! It has the front mounts and rearward angle used on the later model CJ7's but has the rear legs of the CJ8 roll bars. Is the tubing diameter the same as that of a Scrambler roll bar or is it a smaller diameter like a CJ7? Some of the things AMC did with their Jeeps never ceases to amaze me!

It's the smaller diameter like the CJ7. The build date on this one is 1/84. Jeep stamp is very deep on the sides meaning not even close to a JOOP. From what I can tell the early 84 had the taillights like mine and the smaller diameter rollbars and a slightly different decal package. I've gathered this from looking at photos of other Overlanders but I dont know when they were built. Late 83, early 84 is why I have slate blue interior, I think. Except for brochure photo I haven't seen another with slate blue. Mostly nutmeg, 1 garnet, 2 nutmeg Laredos and of course 1 blue. Rear rollbar feet do not have little flip up tiedowns. Rollbar doesn't bother me or I woud pull the rollbar from the postal. Wait, remove both tops, rollbars, reinstall rollbars, reinstall tops. It really doesn't bother me...

Yes guys they do have a full hood lining. she is a stock overlander.Thats how they came you could get a larado option as well:cheers:

The headliner was glued to a cardboard molded headboard that sat inside of rails inside the world cab top. my cardboard headboard has have been removed but the rails are still present. The front headliner material was sagging like an old hooptie in the postal front headliner. It was a lot easier and cleaner for me to just remove the whole cardboard headboard instead of sit there and peel the rest of the headliner off. I assume the same may have happened in the Overlander??
